Why do astronauts orbiting the earth experience weightlessness even though they are still within the earth's gravitational field?

When something is orbiting the Earth, it is actually falling toward the Earth. But because a space shuttle has such a great velocity (speed w/ direction) it misses hitting the Earth's surface. Image you throw a baseball. The baseball follows the path of a curve called a parabola, but the parabola is actually part of an eclipse (elongated circle). Now image if you threw the baseball so hard that when it fell toward the Earth, it actually missed the "edge" of the Earth following the path of the eclipse around the Earth. That baseball would then be launched into orbit. (Of course you would have to throw this baseball at a speed of 11 km/s).

Are astronauts really weightless in orbit why not?

because both the astronaut and the satellite is attracted towards the center of the earth

What technology does astronauts use?

Astronauts use space shuttles( trasport people and equipment), Space probes (robotic exploration, Spacecrafts (trasport crew, equipment, and other technologies)

Did all 3 astronauts scheduled to go in Apollo 18 actually die in separate air planes crashes and were their bodies actually not recovered?

They were not recovered And there is no eveidence to suggest they didn't go to the moon. Families were told the astranauts would be away for up to 7-10 days.

What astronaut recording did Lemon Jelly sample in their single Space Walk from their album Lost Horizons 2002 What mission was the recording from What phenomenon did the astronaut witness?

According to Wikipedia "British band Lemon Jelly features the voice of Alan Bean (describing the sunrise, as seen during a spacewalk) in their song "Spacewalk" from the album Lost Horizons." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Bean). The mission must be Skylab 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spacewalkers)

How do astronauts help us?

they help us by poopl purification and a lot of other things

Why would astronauts not go to the planet mercury?

The planet is very hot on the side facing the sun, up to 800°F (425°C), but in the near vacuum there, it could be dealt with by shielding and cooling. With Mercury's "day" being 58.6 of our days, astronauts could spend weeks on the "cold" side facing away from the Sun, or on the more-temperate boundary zones.

Where does the word astronaut come from?

The term was coined by NASA to refer to men traveling into space.

It means "star traveler" / "star voyager" / "star sailor."

The Latin root astron (from aster) means "star" and the root nautes means sailor, voyager.

Who was an accomplished black astronomer?

Benjamin Banneker was an accomplished black astronomer. He was born in 1731 and died in 1806 who has so many works to his name including his own almanac.

What is the word astronaut derived from?

Coined from Ancient Greek ἄστρον (ástron), "'star'") and ναύτης (naútēs), "'sailor'").

So starsailor.

What force acts on an astronaut standing still on the moon?

Gravity, mainly that of the moon.

Gravity on the Moon is a lot less than on Earth but it works in the same way.

Can astronauts hear in space?

Sound doesn't propagate in space, or in any place without an atmosphere such as the surface of the moon. Sound is mechanical energy, and the energy must be "put into" the material (gas, liquid, solid) that is used to propagate it. This is in contrast to electromagnetic energy, like light, which is "self-contained" and can move through the vacuum of space. Astronauts can communicate by normal conversation inside a spacecraft or in the International Space Station. This is because pressurized air is introduced to simulate conditions on the earth (and allow astronauts to breathe). They can talk normally and be heard. But during a "space walk" or on the surface of the moon, all communication is by radio, even between individuals who are only a few feet apart. An interesting note is that two individuals who are "outside" can turn off their communications gear, press their face plates together, and have a conversation that no one else can hear. This lends new meaning to the term private conversation.

What is Chris Hadfield's full name?

What are the names of astronauts that have orbited the earth?

Names of All AstronautsClick on the related link below for all the names of astronauts.
  • There have been a few hundred astronauts over the years, far too many to list here. You might be able to get a comprehensive list by writing to the Johnson Space center in Houston, but I don't know if even they have one.
  • The only ones you need to know: John Glenn, Lovell, Neil Armstong and Buzz Aldrin.
  • Not necesarily true. There are many more even more important guys to remember. Jim Lovell, Frank Borman, and Jim Anders were the first to leave Earth and go to the Moon. Dave Scott and Neil Armstrong were the first to do an orbital rendevouz and hard docking. And Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin did much of the development theory on orbital rendevouz techniques that made the whole Apollo moon mission scheme possible. He also perfected many of the practicalities for EVA activities (spacewalks) while outside the space capsule on Gemini 12 mission. All of these guys contributed a lot of important stuff to the program. Al Shepard may have been the first guy in space, but when he took over the Apollo 14 mission in what amounted to a "power grab", he drove the mission into the ground making it a personal affair to get himself to the moon. He didn't take the scientific aspects of the mission seriously, neglecting to study those details properly. As a result, that particular mission was one of the least successful scientifically. The 15 through 17 missions were scientific goldmines.
  • Mercury astronauts were, in order of flights Al Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glen, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, and Gordo Cooper. Deke Slayton as one of the original 7, but he was bumped from the flight roster for cardiac anomalies. Slayton became an important administrative head to the astronauts thoughout much of the early program.
  • Gemini astronauts were, in order of flights Gus Grissom & John Young GT3, Jim McDivitt & Ed White GT4, Pete Conrad & Gordo Cooper GT5, Frank Borman & Jim Lovell GT7, Wally Schirra & Tom Stafford GT6, Neil Armstrong & Dave Scott GT8, Tom Stafford & Gene Cernan GT9, John Young & Mike Collins GT10, Pete Conrad & Richard Gordon GT11, Jim Lovell & "Buzz" Aldrin GT12. Gus Grissom & Ed White died later in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967, along with Roger Chaffee, who never got to fly in space.
  • Apollo astronauts were, in order of flights Wally Schirra, Walt Cunningham, Donn Eisele Apollo 7, Frank Borman, Bill Anders, Jim Lovell Apollo 8, Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott, Rusty Scheickart Apollo 9, Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, John Young Apollo 10, Neil Armstrong, "Buzz" Aldrin, Mike Collins Apollo 11, Pete Conrad, Al Bean, Richard Gordon Apollo 12, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, John Swigert Apollo 13, Al Shepard, Stu Roosa, Ed Mitchell Apollo 14, Dave Scott, Jim Irwin, Al Worden Apollo 15, John Young, Charlie Duke, Tom Mattingly Apollo 16, Gene Cernan, Harry Schmitt, Ron Evans Apollo 17. Rick Gordon was supposed to go in Harry Schmitt's slot, but he was bumped for political reasons before the mission took off. Nine more guys flew for Skylab, but the only ones I can remember at this time are Pete Conrad SL1, Al Bean, Owen Garriott, Jack Lousma SL3, HTH

Why do astronauts sleep upright?

They do not. Astronauts in space are effectively weightless, so for them, there is no up or down; the idea of "upright" has no meaning.

What is the cassini space probes mission?
