It's probably the alternator. A battery is only an electrical storage device. It stores electrical energy so that the vehicle can be started next time you want to go someplace. If the alternator isn't converting some of the engine's energy into electical energy, the battery ends up running everything until it eventually just runs out of energy. If you test the alternator and find that it's not functioning, a new alternator may be able to put enough of a charge back into your battery so that you can continue to use it. Unfortunately, an older battery will often fail completely once it is allowed to discharge completely. When you "Jump start" the car you are putting a small amount of electrical energy into the battery, just enough to run the vehicle for a few minutes. Next time you get it started, go directly to an auto parts retailer such as Checker, Kragen or Auto Zone, then have them test the alternator for you. If it doesn't work at all, you'll know to replace the alternator and maybe they can even talk you through doing it yourself. It really isn't that difficult for most vehicles.

The engine light will only be on because there is a problem, take it to your nearest Audi Speacialist Cars where they can plug it into a machine and check what the problem is. it could be a case of just a failed sensor somewhere in the engine but more than likely will be a problem, not something you want to ignore!

Put the Audi a3 in a bown of rice or something that will soak up the water. Keep it in there for at least 2 days. My iPod shuffle got water damaged and was not working. I put it in some rice for about a day or so and it worked like new

-->filter is in the front of the engine, pointed diagonally from the just behind the rad.

-->unscrew the filter drain cover

-->Using a screwdriver to push the orange nipple inward and to the side---that drains all the oil in the canister * not mandatory but its messy if you dont* reset the nipple back into the locked position after drained

-->36mm socket to remove the canister

-->replace the filter and O ring that sits inside the canister. ( use some some needle nose pliers, the o ring has a tab that makes removing it easier )

-->Drain oil from pan.

-->Do the reverse and your all done!

Its an automatic that can function as a manual gearbox. Designed and engineered by Porsche. Good system, but nothing beats the third pedal.
