If the coin has a "Coat of Arms" and the words FLORIN - TWO SHILLINGS, it is probably an Australian coin. The "Coat of Arms" would be supported by a kangaroo and an emu.

If your coin is a genuine minting error rather than a trick coin, you may have something of value.

A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a valuation based on inspection of the coin.

The Australian Sixpence was first minted in 1910 and last minted in 1963.

Australian Sixpences were not minted in 1913, 1915, 1929, 1930 to 1933, 1937, 1947 and 1949.

Australian general circulation Pennies have never featured a kookaburra and are not made from gold.

The only Australian Penny to ever feature the kookaburra was a square trial pattern coin in 1920 and 1921. These coins were never issued.

This "mule" coin came about when the obverse of the Indian Quarter Anna coin and the reverse of the Australian Halfpenny were used together.

There is thought to be 10 or less of these coins in existence.

Both the Indian coin and the Australian coin were minted at the Calcutta Mint.

These coins are privately minted for the Hutt River Province. The characters on the edge of these coins is the serial number.

Australian Pennies have never had a Roman soldier on them.

You are describing a British Penny, and the "Roman soldier" is the goddess Britannia who personifies Britain.

Britannia has appeared on various British coins for hundreds of years.

An Australian Penny or Halfpenny with a "I" mintmark indicates that the coin was minted at either the Calcutta or Bombay Mints in India.

Compounded interest follows a relatively straightforward formula: P(1+r)^t Where: P = Principal amount r = rate of return t = time elapsed In this case, we know all of this information: P = $100 r = 4% = 0.04 t = 1993 - 1880 = 113 years So we can calculate using the formula above: P(1+r)^t 100(1 + 0.04)^113 = 100(1.04)^113 = 100(84.0945) = 8409.45 Therefore, at a rate of 4%, the granddaughters claim they are owed $8409.45. Current Australian banknotes are as follows -

The first and current polymer Five Dollar note released between 1992 and 1997, and from 2002 onwards, had Queen Elizabeth II on the front, and a design showing the new and old Parliament Houses in Canberra, ACT on the reverse.

All Australian coins carry an image of the British monarch on the obverse. There is an Australian design and the denomination on the reverse. The latin terms relating to the monarch were discontinued with the changeover to decimal currency in February 1966.

There were no Australian One Pound notes with either King Edward VII or King Edward VIII.

King Edward VII died in 1910 before Australia started printing notes in 1913.

King Edward VIII, due to his abdication, was not on the throne long enough for any notes to be printed.

There are no mintmarks on a 1939 Australian Penny. There were all minted at the Melbourne Mint.

The designers initials for the obverse (HP - Thomas Humphrey Paget) are below the King's neck and above the "M".

The designers initials for the reverse (KG - George Kruger Gray) are above the Kangaroo's tail.

Planning for the Royal Australian Mint Canberra commenced in 1959 and it was officially opened on the 22nd of February, 1965, just in time to participate in the minting of Australia's new decimal coinage.

Please be advised that Coin Dealers can lose their sense of humour very quickly if asked for valuations on circulated decimal coins.

With the exception of the 1966 round 50 cent coin, unless they are part of a Proof or Uncirculated mint set or are individual Proof or Uncirculated coins and in absolute mint condition, decimal coins are worth whatever is inscribed on them.

Other than the initial Australian 1966 50 cent coin which was round, all subsequent Australian 50 cent coins from 1969 have been dodecagonal or 12 sided.

Because they are of a similar size to the 20 cent coin, they were made 12 sided so that vision impaired people could feel the difference.

If by "banknote" you refer to paper money including promissory notes and Treasury notes, the Bank of England and its predecessors have issued various forms of paper currency from as early as 1694.

It is extremely likely that earlier forms of paper money were issued by different countries, but not as general circulation currency.

Very few English notes have survived from prior to 1775.
