The Australian Five Dollar note was first issued on the 29th of May, 1967, over 15 months after the introduction of decimal currency on the 14th of February, 1966.

Although it was seen as an error of omission by many that it was not included in the original release of decimal banknotes, it was deliberately released later to allow a smooth transition from existing Pound notes to their equivalent Dollar notes.

The Five Dollar note was the equivalent of Two Pounds, Ten Shillings in the old currency.

The Sixpence (six pennies) came from the British currency and spread to many of the Commonwealth countries at different times. Since all countries have now decimalised, the Sixpence is no longer in use. Apart from Britain, there was Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, South Africa, Rhodesia, Malta and many others.

No. IMP is an abbreviation for the Latin "Imperator".

It will appear on most British Empire/Commonwealth coins from the late 19th century to 1948 when India gained independance.

This coin is so completely absent from any Australian coin catalogue that I am suspecting it is not an Australian coin.

Whether one cent coins can actually buy anything in Australia these days is probably a different question altogether, however they are still definitely "legal tender", so technically you CAN still use them.

I assume you are referring to a large cent piece, about the size of a half dollar. An 1828 cent would retail for about $20 if well-worn, up to about 10 or 11 times that if almost uncirculated.

The current polymer Australian Ten Dollar note has Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson (balladist & journalist) on the front and Dame Mary Gilmore (poet & human rights campaigner) on the back. The $10 note only has the words "Waltzing Matilda" on it. The text along the bottom of the note are excerpts from "The Man From Snowy River". "Waltzing Matilda" and "The Man From Snowy River" are both the work of Banjo Paterson.
