Australian Coins

Prior to 1910, Australia used the British currency. British coins continued to circulate with Australian coins for many years.

The Australian coinage was first introduced in 1910 and included the Threepence, Sixpence, Shilling and Florin. All coins were based on the equivalent British coins and were made from sterling silver.

The following year in 1911, the One Penny and Halfpenny coins were introduced, again all based on the equivalent British coins and were made from bronze.

Paper money was introduced in 1913.

In the early 1960's, it was decided that Australia should have a decimal currency rather than the cumbersome British Imperial style of currency. It was eventually decided that Australia would adopt the Dollar of 100 cents as its currency.

The last of the predecimal coins were minted in 1964. On the 14th of February, 1966 the new Australian decimal currency was issued to a well prepared Australian public.

Although the Australian 2 cent coin was withdrawn from circulation in 1994, they are still legal tender and are worth 2 cents.

There are two Australian 2 cent coins that are considered to be valuable, the 1967 and 1968 coins, both minted at the Perth Mint. What makes them valuable is the missing designers initials (SD) below the lizard and to the left of the front right claw.

This is the most common Australian $2 note, circulated examples are only worth their face value, if in Uncirculated condition they retail for up to $10 each.

With the exception of the 1966 round 50 cent coin, all issues of the Australian 50 cent coin are potentially still in circulation, so unless they are Mint Uncirculated, not much more than face value. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation.

These coins are potentially still in circulation so, unless they are part of a Proof or Uncirculated mint set or are individual Proof or Uncirculated coins and in absolute mint condition, they are worth One Dollar.

An Australian 1997 copper-aluminium-nickel One Dollar coin (Elizabeth II)(Kingsford Smith Birth Centenary), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to $25 AUD.

An Australian 1939 Ten Shilling note (Sheehan/McFarlane)(serial F35), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch anything up to $3,750 AUD. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from $115 to $1,400 AUD.

Decimal Currency commenced in Australia on the 14th of February, 1966, the day the 1 cent coin became the basic unit of our currency. The coins were actually minted in 1965 in the Melbourne, Perth and Sydney Mints.

Coins minted for the release of Australia's decimal currency included the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins.

The first Bank of England Fifty Pound note is white and printed only on one side. It was first issued in 1725, last issued in 1943 and ceased to be legal tender in 1945, and is 211 mm x 133 mm. Earlier notes were a little smaller.

The second Bank of England Fifty Pound note (Series D) is mostly brown and features Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and Sir Christopher Wren on the reverse. It was first issued in 1981, last issued in 1994 and ceased to be legal tender in 1996, and is 169 mm x 95 mm.

The third Bank of England Fifty Pound note (Series E) is mostly red and features Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and Sir John Houblon on the reverse. It was first issued in 1994 and is still in circulation, and is 156 mm x 85 mm. The Bank of England will withdraw these notes on 30-Apr-2014.

The fourth and current Bank of England Fifty Pound note (Series F) is mostly red and features Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and Matthew Boulton and James Watt on the reverse. It was first issued in November 2011, and is 156 mm x 85 mm.

These coins are still in circulation so, unless they are part of a proof set or are uncirculated and in absolute mint condition, they are worth 50 cents.

The Australian 2001 issue of 50 cent coins was a "commemorative" issue for the "Centenary of Federation". There were 10 different designs issued. One each for the 6 states, 2 territories, Norfolk Island and another based on the traditional design.

Arnold Machin was an English born artist, designer and sculptor who, amongst other things, was commissioned to design the obverse of Australia's initial release of decimal coinage.

An Australian 1930 Penny is the rarest coin that has ever been released into general circulation in Australian history. Only 3,000 were minted and of those, 1,500 still exist and are trading in todays market. They are still arguing about why the 1930 Penny was released at all.

There are only six 1930 Proof coins known to exist, three in museums and three in private collections.

Depending on who you choose to believe, a Proof 1930 Penny might go for anything between $250,000 and $500,000 AUD. One of the private collectors declined an offer of $1,000,000 AUD for his proof coin a few years ago.

There were 137.892 million minted.

These coins are no longer in circulation, but unless they are part of a proof set or as previously described, they are worth 1 cent.

The British Farthing was in use in Australia before Australia got its own coinage in 1910, but there has never been an Australian Farthing coin.

Australian 1964 Pennies were minted in 1964, so as at January 2011, they are 47 years old.

Not all coins need a mintmark. All Australian 1919 Pennies were minted in Melbourne.

For reasons that are not explained, most 1919 Australian Pennies had no mintmark, others had a dot above the top scroll and below the bottom scroll, and others had a dot below the bottom scroll.
