Can people with autism tell if another person has autism?

We often can. It's a lot like a gay person being able to recognize another gay person--the odd body posture, speech, and lack of eye contact are pretty obvious signals. Families and spouses of autistic people have a similar knack for recognizing autism.

The amusing result of this phenomenon? At least two or three of the engineering faculty at my local university show signs of Asperger Syndrome! My personal theory: Autism is the origin of the "nerd" stereotype!

Is 5-HTP an effective treatment for Asperger's Syndrome?

The amino acid l-tryptophan is converted into 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) which is then converted into serotonin. 5-HTP has been used to treat depression, anxiety, and insomnia. When used in people with Asperger's Syndrome, it is typically for depression and anxiety, not other aspects of Asperger's Syndrome. Some people with Asperger's Syndrome report decreased anxiety and a better mood while taking 5-HTP. Some report side effects of nausea and mind-affecting issues (e.g., hallucinations, difficulty concentrating). Long-term use can cause other side effects.

Could periodically lying down flat on the floor with hands at sides be a symptom of autism spectrum disorder?

The person might have an autism spectrum disorder or might not. That symptom would not prompt a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder. For a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder, the person will have a set of symptoms, not just one.

To use this behavior to help diagnose an autism spectrum disorder as opposed to another condition, more information would be necessary. I know of a child who did something similar for the purpose of getting attention, rather than having an autism spectrum disorder. I know of a child who would periodically lie on the floor, motionless, pretending to be dead, apparently as a response to having heard a discussion about someone having died. It would be useful to know the context of the behavior. Does the person seem to find it stress-reducing? Does a certain event trigger this behavior? Does it happen several times per day or only a couple times per week? Does the person become agitated if interrupted during this process? Is this a behavior the person might have learned in kindergarten and has made part of his or her daily routine? These questions are examples of additional information that could be helpful to the person's doctor in diagnosing whatever condition it is.

What is a good organization for autism?

A good organization is one that is lead by Autistic people themselves, for example Autistic Self Advocacy Network. A bad organization is one that works against Autistic people, for example Autism Speaks causes a lot of serious harm to Autistic people while claiming to help.

Why cant autism be cured?

Autism isn't a disease, it is a difference in how the brain works - to cure autism would mean changing a persons brain so that they think differently, experience the world differently, and they would essentially no longer be themselves.

What can you do when a child with autism is crying and you do not know why?

If the child can communicate with you then you ask them why they are crying. It may be an autistic child is experiencing a meltdown: an uncontrollable emotional outburst where they are not able to interact with people socially. If they are having a meltdown it is best to get them to a place with little sensory stimulation and give them something to focus on like a toy, and don't interact too much with them as adding sensory stimulation (such as by touching them) or trying to talk to them can make the situation worse. Once they come round from the meltdown ask them what was wrong.

Do Autism patients usually become substance abusers?

They have been abusing a naturally occurring psychedelic ever since birth. The substance, called bufotenin, was found in many urine tests of people with autism, including young children. In other words, they have always been substance abusers and they always will be. Whether or not people want to kill every last substance abuser on this planet is up to them.

Can people with autism work?

Yes, Autistic people can work - although those who are severely effected may not be able to work, and those who are less severely effected may be restricted in what work they can do. Currently 95% of Autistic people in the UK are not in full-tome employment or education, this is less a reflection on Autistic people's abilities and more on discrimination.

Autistic people often find it hard to hold down jobs because workplaces often discriminate against them and it's difficult to continue to act neurotypical when you're not so Autistic people often experience burnout. Job interviews are also heavily biased against Autistic people, they focus on neurotypical behaviour such as eye contact and body language, interviews also often include role play and knowing when to hold back honesty, all of which are a struggle for Autistic people.

Christopher has Asperger's Syndrome and what according to him are his behavioral problems?

If you need to know what his behavioral problems are according to him, you should ask him. He could have problems similar to other people with Asperger's Syndrome. He might become violent or freeze up when stressed. He might seem disruptive due to sensory overload issues. There are many possibilities.

What are the chances of having a child with Asperger's Syndrome when your husband has a brother that has it?

What do you do when someone who has Autism keeps following you all the time?

You do exactly as you would do if anyone else was following you, you tell them firmly to stop and if they don't you take it further such as by contacting the police. Just because a person is Autistic doesn't make it okay for them to be following you or mean you have to act differently.

Can kids with autism drink milk?

They drink the same fluids anyone drinks unless there is some impairment in the swallowing function.

Are people with autism crazy?

No, autistic people are not 'crazy'. Many autistic people can have mental health issues but they're no more likely to have mental health issues than anyone else and often mental health issues in autistic people is more to do with how society treats autistic people - e.g. depression is more likely in autistic people who are bullied or face discrimination.

Having a child with autism is making you depressed?

You don't have a child with autism, you have an Autistic child - recognise their identity. Having an Autistic child isn't what makes you depressed, the fact you're ableist towards that child is making you depressed because you believe that child is worth less as an Autistic person.

Get away from other 'Autism Moms'/'Autism Parents' and avoid organizations like Autism Speaks which see Autism as a bad thing, go talk to Autistic people and parents who are allies to their Autistic children so you get a better understanding of how to effectively care for your child and stop seeing them as some sort of burden. Your child is not to blame for your depression.

Can people get pets even though they have autism?

Yes, autistic people can have pets and often prefer animals to people. As long as a person is able to care for a pet, whether autistic or not, then they can get a pet - some autistic people also have pets as support animals for comfort and company.

How do you cure Asperger's Syndrome?

You cannot cure Asperger's Syndrome. It is a neurological condition that affects how the brain works, so rather than curing it, people with Asperger's Syndrome can learn or be taught some methods to deal with some of its effects. They can also be given medications that can treat some of the symptoms, but not the cause.

There is no cure for Aspergers Syndrome. There are a number of ways that a person with Aspergers can be helped to live a good quality, independent life which is sometimes made difficult by the condition.

Why do some people treat autistic individuals like we have superpowers?

Thier brains are hindered in one way or another by this illness. (i am not a doctor). They are not always capable of understanding the world the same way a person without autism does. To really understand why they need special help, you must first understand why you can do the things you do, like walk, talk, react to things, learn things...I would check out WebMD.com for more information on autism.
