BB guns are not the best choice for killing rats. I suggest a Pellet Rifle. Here's why. BB guns use a smooth bore barrel. It's like a simple tube. When a BB hits a target it doesn't deform it's stays in the shape of a BB. It's possible that the rat will run off and die but then you have to find it. A good pellet rifle uses a rifled barrel (it has helical grooves in it). the pellet spins when it leaves the barrel and fly's straight into the target. The pellet also deforms when it hits the target making a quick clean kill. Pellet rifles also offer a wide variety of pellets that can be used. BB guns don't. BB's have a tendency to wonder off target because they tumble not spin, so no two shots will ever be in the same place after a few feet. Several good pellet rifles are offered for under $100 so I suggest that you look at them. Try the Crosman or Gamo brand of rifles.

Companies that make airguns and rifle don't advertise the distance that their air guns shoot. Because it can vary with the weight of the pellet or BB. They rate how fast the air gun is capable of shooting in Feet Per second. (FPS) it can be safe to say that the air gun can project a pellet or BB at least 150 feet and further.

BB guns are inherently inaccurate, because of the barrel design. BB barrels are commonly smooth boar (Like a straw). When fired, they tumble not spin towards the target. This action causes them to be off targets as the range increases. Most pellet's are usually fired from a rifled barrel. This gives them a spin as the travel towards the target, giving them more accuracy.

Birds can be killed with a BB gun at close range. Larger animals, such as squirrels and rabbits are not likely to be killed, but would be AT LEAST injured- which is not a good thing for a hunter- so don't try it. Pellet guns typically have more power, and SOME pellet guns are used for hunting small game.

In the truest sense of the definition of "automatic", no a bb gun cannot be automatic. In function, however, a BB gun can be automatic. A good example would be the Drozd BB gun which fires full automatic, but used CO2 as the power source.

It depends what you need it for. If you need a large heavy sniper for woodland get the l96. But if you want a light tactical sniper which is good for urban warfare aswell get the m50.

Colt makes a 1911-A1 Pellet gun made by Umarex. I know of no BB gun unless you are asking about an Air Soft gun. The Pellet gun is very good. I can not answer about an Air soft gun.
