Ben Carson

While today Dr. Ben Carson is rising star in Republican party politics and a Fox News commentator, for many years he was internationally known entirely for his work as a brain surgeon. In fact, he was honored by Time magazine and CNN, both of which placed him in the top 20 most important physicians and scientists in 2001. His work with conjoined twins was also widely praised. The vast majority of his patients had good outcomes, although like any surgeon, he was not able to perform miracles. As one of the few African-American brain surgeons, he was also a role model for many young men and women of color. I enclose a bio about him from the teaching hospital where he worked for many years.

Ben Carson attended Southwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan, from 1969 to 1971. He graduated in 1971 before going on to pursue a career in medicine. Carson's experiences during his high school years played a significant role in shaping his future aspirations.

Dr. Ben Carson was a good role model because he achieved success despite challenges and difficulties. He was considered unintelligent in school and lived off welfare for the greater part of his childhood. His father abandoned his mother, his brother and him at a very young age as well.

After enough effort and encouragement from his mother Sonya Carson, Ben Carson managed to be the top of his class for many grades. He went on full scholarship to Yale because of his intellect and abilities, but still faced problems there. He eventually overcame them and became a neurosurgeon at John Hopkins.

There, he preformed surgeries on many people that no one was willing to even try. He was the first doctor to successfully complete a hemispherectomy and with it, he saved many, many lives. Furthermore, Ben Carson was the first person to separate Siamese Twins, joined by the cranium, while keeping both patients alive.

Ben Carson's whole life story was about success despite failure and that is how he is a good role model. He proves how a good education and doing your best can get you far in life. Also, he does not brag about his accomplishments. He is a modest, intelligent and caring person. Many people believe that Dr. Ben Carson is the best neurosurgeon in the world, for good reason.
