However, there was a gap - in Berlin, where they was freedom of movememt between East and West Berlin. At the Potsdam Conference in 1945 it had been agreed that Berlin was to adminstered as a whole by the four Allies. Of course, with the emergence of the Cold War this became impossible. Refugees and migrants of every kind poured through this gap, and East Germany was rapidly losing skilled people. In 1961 the East German government, in consultation with the Soviet government, built the Berlin Wall, in order to halt migration out of East Germany. It was of course an admission of failure. The Berlin Wall came to have a symbolic and emotional significance that went well beyond its actual importance.

No, it was after the war. At the end of WW2 Berlin was divided into 4 sectors. One American, one English, one French and one Soviet. After World War II, Berlin was divided into occupation zones. The Soviets placed a barrier in order to try to force West Germany to give up control of Berlin. With help to West Germany from France and the U.S., the barrier was taken down in 1949. How long was the Berlin wall up for?

Answer

It took about 18 months from the time the Wall opened until the entire structure, minus the piece they left up as a museum, was removed. Among the many tasks accomplished were removing the two walls that surrounded no-man's land, tearing down all the guard towers, removing the spikes from the Spree River--the East Germans ran a row of spikes down the middle of the river, right along the East/West Berlin border, to keep people from swimming across--digging up all the land mines and unexploded ordnance, including quite a bit from World War II, and evaluating all the guard dogs to see if any could be retrained

How did the Berlin blockade leads to Berlin wall?

It didn't. The two events were complex enough that I can't really do them justice here, but I'll try.

The Berlin Blockade started in 1949. Generalissimo Stalin was still General Secretary of the Soviet Union, and he wanted ALL of Germany to be under Soviet domination. The reason is very simple: The Soviet Union is close to completely landlocked. They've got one warm-water port (a port that doesn't freeze over in winter hence can be used year-round) to their name and it's in Vladivostok - hence nearly useless. West Germany has several warm water ports. Stalin wanted it. Stalin's intent was to first force the Allies out of West Berlin, then out of West Germany.
