Why does your parakeet look depressed?
A pigeon can die of depression and I have actually seen it happen. I was sitting in my car at red light on Columbus Blvd. in Philadelphia when a bunch of pigeons few onto the road. Well, there was this giant 4X4 next to me and I doubt he saw any of them - but when the light turned green - zoom! - off he went. Unfortunately, right at that moment a pigeon had been walking right in front of his front right wheel - so right then and there I saw a pigeon die of depression. And boy, let me tell you - it was really, really depressed. And so was I after I saw it - but there was nothing anyone could do - it was completely smushed!!!

Simply put, you don't! This will always be a bird's natural instinct (and they LOVE those door wreaths)! You could hang the wreath elsewhere...otherwise, get the camera out and take pictures of the cute little baby birds, as I do! It's really a fascinating experience seeing birds taking care of their young. If the wreath is on your front door, you have an opportunity to watch "up close"....a unique experience, since this doesn't happen often, in the animal world! Don't worry about your door opening and closing. Birds adapt to the activity.

I suppose it could but I doubt it would be too healthy for the bird. It's like a puppy eating food designed for seniors, or a Chihuahua eating food meant for dogs life St.Bernards. They could eat it, but it's better for them to munch on something made more specifically for them.
Why can birds sit on power lines without being shocked?
The short answer is they are not grounded. You can hang from a line also and not be harmed, but don't try it as if you do it wrong you can be severely hurt or killed. So what does "they are not grounded" mean? Electric current flows from high voltage to low voltage. The power line is high voltage. The earth, or ground, is low voltage. Anything in contact with the earth is also at the same low voltage. That is why there are insulators between the lines and the poles. The higher voltage the lines, the bigger the insulators. You can see this for yourself by looking at a high voltage tower versus a typical wooden power poll. When the bird lands on the line, it is only in contact with the line. There is no path to the lower voltage ground for the electrical current to flow thorugh. No current flow means no harm to the bird. People get into to trouble with power lines because they are almost always in contact with the pole or the ground when they, or something they are holding, touch the line, which means the current flows through them to the lower voltage. Note that the lower voltage does not have to be zero volts. It just has to be lower than the high voltage for the current to flow. It is not the voltage that kills you. It is the combination of voltage and current. No current or low current, no harm. When you scoot your feet on the carpet on a dry day and touch the door knob, a spark jumps and you feel a small snap. Your skin is charged up to 10's of thousands of volts, but there is very little current flow, so no harm is done. Hope this helps.

Can you have chickens and budgies in the same cage?
No, it is not safe. Cockatoos can hurt smaller birds very easily. Budgies often have "big bird" attitudes and will bother other species. The cockatoo can hurt or kill the smaller bird when it reacts to the smaller bird annoying it. The cockatoo isn't being mean or bad, it just doesn't understand why it is wrong to react to the smaller bird in an aggressive way. Even if they are bred in captivity and hand-fed/hand-reared, cockatoos are not genetically distinct from their wild ancestors. They will still act like wild animals. You can obedience-train a dog not to bother a cat, but it's not worth the risk to try to train a cockatoo to leave a budgie alone. Keep them in separate cages and never let them play together.
Why is your parakeet shivering?
Your parakeet may be cold or sick. If it is cold, you may have it too close to air conditioning or something that has cold drafts. If you get your parakeet wet enough and don't dry it, it could catch a chill and die. Sometimes they are simply nervous and will sit and puff out their feathers. I would first like to extend my deepest condolences regarding the loss of your canary. I have had MANY friends throughout my life that have accidentally left the cage door open. NONE of them EVER came back. Perhaps, yours will be different. I suppose we can hope for the best. The ONLY way to attract your canary is to have fostered a relationship in which it would not want to leave in the first place. For all we know, it has found it's natural home already. Are yellow sided green cheek conures friendly?
They are sweet and very friendly, but remember it's how we interact with our bird companions that make them good or bad birds. My yellow sided is highly animated and has a huge repetoire. He loves to get everything moving in his cage, and loves time out of the cage for head rubs and running around. Excellent pet; note that all conures can be nippy at times. Mine nips when we play with certain toys and also to tell me he needs to go to the bathroom.
Never let your parrot have any chocolate, avocado, fresh fruit seeds, iceburg lettuce (that hard white-ish stuff, use the green leafy lettuce like romaine, butter or leaf), raw meat, raw eggs, caffiene, dairy, or alcohol. Other than that, if they enjoy it they can have a bite.

My bird loves Cream of Wheat, oatmeal, grits, spaghetti, squash, lima beans, brocolli, unsalted pistacchios, pine nuts, boiled egg whites. Just keep in mind the no-no's (like avocado, definitely limit the dairy) that Bird Lady mentioned, and you'd be amazed how much a bird can share of the healthy food you fix for yourself.
Also avoid garlic, mushrooms and any obvious molds on cheese (even the injected kind in Blue Cheese). Caffeine and fizzy, carbonated drinks can cause problems as parrots can regurgitate but not burp food and the gas can get trapped and cause great discomfort. Some parrots enjoy scattering their food on a surface and rummaging through it as a chicken would do: Looking for that special taster's choice of a seed or nut. But please be careful and note the condition of the scattered food and clean the area regularly: back to the mold issue. Dried foods can and do get mold due to differing conditions in your house and environment. dried nuts can have mold or be rotten inside. Usually Macaws are smart and drop anything that doesn't meet their high standards: but as good parents, we have to watch out as well. JP recommends freezing all seed and foods for 48 hours prior to giving them out and keeping the bulk products in air tight bags until needed. avoid plain white bread as well: nutition is low: Whole Foods and other stores make a number of high seed/grain content breads. You can always ask your local baker to make loaves that have extra seeds/grains and other things you provide baked into the breads. Be friendly; be a known consumer and patron of the store and ask really nice: they have to use their stuff; but if you ask to add more of their stuff: Don't try to negotiate a cheap deal: the cost is the enjoyment of your child and besides: you (we...) like the stuff, and my bird eats everything I do...If he sees me! How do you safely introduce 8 week old chicks to 24 week old hens?
The is no real "safe" way to do this short of separating the young from the "older".
You are going to get pecking order squabbles no matter what you do. Just make sure the young ones have a place to run to when the feathers hit the fan. I provide a limited access shelter in the coop that the older birds cannot fit into, when the young one's get chased, they hide. Eventually, everything gets sorted out.
