Why can birds sit on power lines without being shocked?

The short answer is they are not grounded. You can hang from a line also and not be harmed, but don't try it as if you do it wrong you can be severely hurt or killed. So what does "they are not grounded" mean? Electric current flows from high voltage to low voltage. The power line is high voltage. The earth, or ground, is low voltage. Anything in contact with the earth is also at the same low voltage. That is why there are insulators between the lines and the poles. The higher voltage the lines, the bigger the insulators. You can see this for yourself by looking at a high voltage tower versus a typical wooden power poll. When the bird lands on the line, it is only in contact with the line. There is no path to the lower voltage ground for the electrical current to flow thorugh. No current flow means no harm to the bird. People get into to trouble with power lines because they are almost always in contact with the pole or the ground when they, or something they are holding, touch the line, which means the current flows through them to the lower voltage. Note that the lower voltage does not have to be zero volts. It just has to be lower than the high voltage for the current to flow. It is not the voltage that kills you. It is the combination of voltage and current. No current or low current, no harm. When you scoot your feet on the carpet on a dry day and touch the door knob, a spark jumps and you feel a small snap. Your skin is charged up to 10's of thousands of volts, but there is very little current flow, so no harm is done. Hope this helps.

Do budgies birds change colours?

Budgies are not colour blind. No parrot is colour blind, and their vivid colouring is what attracts the female to the male. Having acute colour vision helps the birds find their food by sight, as they can see the bright colours of the flowers on which they often feed. It is believed that budgies, along with many other bird species, can see better than humans can.

What kinds of food do budgies not eat?

they do not eat meat and NEVER feed them avacado because they can get very sick from it. You can't feed them other foods humans may have except for vegetables, fruits and budgie seeds.

Can you fly by flapping your arms?

No, this is physically impossible unless you are a bird.

What are parakeets favorite color?

There is no specific color they like better over all. It may just differ from bird to bird what colors they like best, as parakeets can actually see more colors than we can!

Why do birds ruffle their feathers when they are cold?

although birds do not have hairs but feathers to carry out this task. Also the feathers on the bird which make up a large surface area compared to the surface area on the body help to separate the warm air from the cold air, keeping the cold air away.

Do birds poop and pee?

Yes, and also when they are just standing on the ground, too.

It is a common response to being scared or startled, to defecate and 'lighten the load' allowing them to fly faster to escape danger.

Can you have chickens and budgies in the same cage?

No, it is not safe. Cockatoos can hurt smaller birds very easily. Budgies often have "big bird" attitudes and will bother other species. The cockatoo can hurt or kill the smaller bird when it reacts to the smaller bird annoying it. The cockatoo isn't being mean or bad, it just doesn't understand why it is wrong to react to the smaller bird in an aggressive way. Even if they are bred in captivity and hand-fed/hand-reared, cockatoos are not genetically distinct from their wild ancestors. They will still act like wild animals. You can obedience-train a dog not to bother a cat, but it's not worth the risk to try to train a cockatoo to leave a budgie alone. Keep them in separate cages and never let them play together.

Do budgies sleep with their eyes closed?

they close thier eyes but they in fact do not sleep

Why is your parakeet shivering?

Your parakeet may be cold or sick. If it is cold, you may have it too close to air conditioning or something that has cold drafts. If you get your parakeet wet enough and don't dry it, it could catch a chill and die. Sometimes they are simply nervous and will sit and puff out their feathers. You should take it to a veterinarian to make sure it is not sick.

What are budgies nests made out of?

Parakeets don't really make nests like finches for example. In wild they nest in holes in trees, and in captivity they need nesting boxed. wild budgies use hollow trees for there nest. Domesticated budgies you have to buy a nest box or they will not mate also if u want to know how to make a nest box goggle it for peace sakes

How do you make a canary nest?

I would first like to extend my deepest condolences regarding the loss of your canary. I have had MANY friends throughout my life that have accidentally left the cage door open. NONE of them EVER came back. Perhaps, yours will be different. I suppose we can hope for the best. The ONLY way to attract your canary is to have fostered a relationship in which it would not want to leave in the first place. For all we know, it has found it's natural home already. Chin up, and good luck.

Are yellow sided green cheek conures friendly?

They are sweet and very friendly, but remember it's how we interact with our bird companions that make them good or bad birds. My yellow sided is highly animated and has a huge repetoire. He loves to get everything moving in his cage, and loves time out of the cage for head rubs and running around. Excellent pet; note that all conures can be nippy at times. Mine nips when we play with certain toys and also to tell me he needs to go to the bathroom.

What meats can parrots eat?

AnswerParrots/birds are lactose intolerant...limit dairy products(i.e cheese, milk). AnswerParrots, from parakeets to macaws, can share lots of foods with their human friends. In fact, the more 'people food' a bird will share, the healthier the bird will be in most cases, with a few precautions!

Never let your parrot have any chocolate, avocado, fresh fruit seeds, iceburg lettuce (that hard white-ish stuff, use the green leafy lettuce like romaine, butter or leaf), raw meat, raw eggs, caffiene, dairy, or alcohol. Other than that, if they enjoy it they can have a bite.

Limit the amount of sugar, fat or salt they get in people foods. One little nibble from a potato chip is one thing, a whole potato chip is, however, not good for a bird.

Pet parrots love a little bird of egg, some of your plain cereal, all fruits except avocado (don't leave seed in), rice, vegetables (both cooked and raw) with raw corn on the cob being a favorite of many, a very small amount of meat but some of the larger parrot love crunching a good chicken bone or even a steak bone and eating the marrow. It will not hurt them as long as you remove the bone within a few hours to ensure that it does not spoil.

In fact, any fresh foods that might spoil quickly, such as meat, milk, cheese, egg, should be removed after a few hours to prevent spoilage.

Remember, a serving for a bird of these people foods is small. One green pea is enough for a parakeet. A few is enough for a medium sized parrot and a small teaspoon full is enough for a macaw or cockatoo.

Mix together a variety of veggies and fruits to create a bird salad for your FID (feathered kid) and include some green leafy lettuce.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My bird loves Cream of Wheat, oatmeal, grits, spaghetti, squash, lima beans, brocolli, unsalted pistacchios, pine nuts, boiled egg whites. Just keep in mind the no-no's (like avocado, definitely limit the dairy) that Bird Lady mentioned, and you'd be amazed how much a bird can share of the healthy food you fix for yourself.

Also avoid garlic, mushrooms and any obvious molds on cheese (even the injected kind in Blue Cheese). Caffeine and fizzy, carbonated drinks can cause problems as parrots can regurgitate but not burp food and the gas can get trapped and cause great discomfort. Some parrots enjoy scattering their food on a surface and rummaging through it as a chicken would do: Looking for that special taster's choice of a seed or nut. But please be careful and note the condition of the scattered food and clean the area regularly: back to the mold issue. Dried foods can and do get mold due to differing conditions in your house and environment. dried nuts can have mold or be rotten inside. Usually Macaws are smart and drop anything that doesn't meet their high standards: but as good parents, we have to watch out as well. JP recommends freezing all seed and foods for 48 hours prior to giving them out and keeping the bulk products in air tight bags until needed. avoid plain white bread as well: nutition is low: Whole Foods and other stores make a number of high seed/grain content breads. You can always ask your local baker to make loaves that have extra seeds/grains and other things you provide baked into the breads. Be friendly; be a known consumer and patron of the store and ask really nice: they have to use their stuff; but if you ask to add more of their stuff: Don't try to negotiate a cheap deal: the cost is the enjoyment of your child and besides: you (we...) like the stuff, and my bird eats everything I do...If he sees me! M&M Peatnuts are consumed under the bed at midnight when i am out of town and can brush my teeth at least ten times: Otherwise he 'knows' I've had something he didn't!

How do you safely introduce 8 week old chicks to 24 week old hens?

The is no real "safe" way to do this short of separating the young from the "older".

You are going to get pecking order squabbles no matter what you do. Just make sure the young ones have a place to run to when the feathers hit the fan. I provide a limited access shelter in the coop that the older birds cannot fit into, when the young one's get chased, they hide. Eventually, everything gets sorted out.

What will happen if you eat an egg shell?

An egg shell is protein based, and while it is not desirable to eat as it provides little nutrition and is typically a hard and unpalatable substance, it is digestable. The acids in a human stomach would melt it and the body would absorb what little nutrition it had to offer.

How high to mount a nesting box?

Between 8 inches and 24 inches from the floor of the coop is normal. The higher the box from the floor the easier is is for the egg collection. The hens will nest wherever they are placed as long as they have easy access.

Can parakeets eat olives?

Yes-I've just lost the majority of my crop from one tree to hungry birds. At first I wasn't sure where they had disappearred to but the remaining olives had quite a few peck marks in them and I saw the birds in the tree.

How many eggs does a hen lay?

Some hen breeds can produce over 300 eggs per year, with 'the highest authenticated rate of egg laying being 371 eggs in 364 days'[26]". Therefore for an average hen it would be from 250 to 300.

When do chickens stop laying eggs?

Did you know they have a laying season? This is dependent on the length of the daylight hours. In the north when days are shorter in the late fall, winter and early spring, the hens take a rest and build up their reserves. You can get them to start laying earlier, by purchasing an electrical timer and attach it to the lights in the hen house. Set the timer to give fourteen hours of light a day. But do give the hens a deserved rest in there sometime!

The hens will lay seasonally (fullest production starts in the spring) for about 18 months before their first molt when they shed their tattered and worn feathers for a new coat of feathers. It is important to feed them a laying pellet formula that is high in protein at this time since the feathers are made of protein. While molting they do not usually lay. You may get the odd egg here and there but not regularly. Then when the molting session is over, they lay again for another season.

They will continue to lay for 3 to six years depending on feed and breed of hen. It is good to get new chicks to replace the older chickens before their production tapers off.

Do not put the baby chicks in directly with the older hens. Without their own mama to protect them the older hens will try to establish the "pecking order" and will kill them. Wait until the new chicks are fully feathered with the mature feathers, not the fluffy down, before you try gradual introduction.

What bird has feathers on its head that it can move?

A cockatiel has feathers on its head that it can move around.

How do you teach a baby bird to fly?

You need to get them warm. Get a heated pad and a towel. You those is a box or fish tank whatever you got. One they are warm you want to do is see if they are dehydrated.

This next step is very careful don not pinch them hard. Very slightly pinch there skin and if it doesn't go back instantly then they are dehydrated.

Mix a teaspoon of salt

3 teaspoons of sugar

1 quart

Mix it up gets it a little warm and give them that.

Later you need to give the food.

They need feed 5 times a day in little amounts. A couple of cc's at a time.

You want to feed the puppy formula. You just get the dry mix and mix it with water. Feed them in a syringe with no needle Once they are old enough feed things fruits like grapes, bananas and nuts (peanuts form the store. Also you can feed the peanut butter.

Also you have to make them go to the bathroom. Get paper towel and get it wet rub there butts and the will stimulate the to go to the bathroom. You must do this!

You will have to take care of them till they are about 4 months old. Don't release them around winter time because they don't have time to get food. So release them around spring and summer.

Why do cuckoos practice nest parasitisim?

Cuckoos don't raise their own young. Instead, a female cuckoo lays her eggs in another bird's nest. The cuckoo chick tends to be bigger and grow faster than the host bird's young, outcompeting them for food, and usually ends up killing them.

Some species do seem to realize when a cuckoo egg is laid in their nest and will destroy it or build a new nest on top of the old one and the eggs in it. However, many species seem clueless, even if the cuckoo chick ends up growing much larger than they are.

A few other species are parasitic breeders, including cowbirds.
