How does a blacksmith forge an axe?
A Blacksmith uses a hammer, chisel and hole punches to reshape a piece of iron. Much of the work is done on an anvil, a large block of hardened steel that is resistant to hammer blows.
He (or she) will usually do the reshaping while the iron is red hot, which makes if softer and easier to reshape. Red hot metal is held with a variety of tongs while it is being reshaped.
Pieces of iron can be joined by riveting and forge welding, and sometimes it is further reshaped after joining.
Blacksmiths are also skilled at hardening iron and steels by heat treatment, so that the cutting edges of knives, shears and chisels stay sharp for as long as possible. They can also anneal metal, to make it less brittle.

Does a male have to be a blacksmith or can a female be a blacksmith?
1st Answer:
No
2nd Answer:
Yes.
Looking at the list of jobs medieval women are known to have had, I find that they worked as miners, stone masons, carpenters, and a variety of other jobs some people think of today as men's work. Blacksmiths were people who worked on manors, however, and so many of them never had guilds to join. The result is the women who were blacksmiths would probably not be recorded. Certainly women would not be prohibited from such work on most manors.
There is more information at a related question below.

What level of society was the blacksmiths wife on?
During the medieval period a village blacksmith was considered to be a medium-level skilled craftsman, not as important as a master mason or an armourer but higher in status than an ordinary field worker. His work was essential in providing everyday ironwork, which was expensive to make and to buy, but he would not normally produce specialist metalwork such as swords, spurs and other such items.
A blacksmith's wife would have the same level of status as her husband, meaning that she had a slightly better than average peasant house, with perhaps a lager plot of land attached (the croft and toft); she could perhaps afford to buy slightly better quality material for clothes than just drab burrell. She would still not be considered wealthy and her clothing would still be fairly drab and dull in colour.
The major point is that a blacksmith (and his wife) would have a greater say in village affairs, helping to settle disputes and being considered "good men and true" in legal terms.
