-Well- I presume you have some misunderstanding. I myself am from the New England Region and -here- "Lowell, Mass" is THE HUB for amateur boxing. The New England Championships are held there at Memorial Auditorium each year. My friend Harold Souther (Newburyport, Mass) was a NEGG champion, in his day. I myself had shot at that title in 83-85-86 (finished 2nd twice and "top third", once -156lbs-). The GOLDEN GLOVES is an Organization and they stage TOURNAMENTS. If you win the "Title" you are the champ in the district. It goes as high as the "Nationals" level. When I was boxing, actually, the AAU (later the USA/ABF) was the STONGER of the two governing bodies. There possibly could be places where "golden gloves" are "awarded" buy, it is a "Cult" sort of thing, if it exists, at all. In NE championships there is a COSTELLO Cup awarded to the voted upon "best boxer" of tournament. Sometimes, Tournaments will refere to the same thing as "Golden Boy" award. I hope this helps you. I have not heard of metal plates in gloves! but in June 1983, Luis Resto beat Michael Collins so badly that Collins told his father/trainer that he felt like he was getting hit with rocks, when the fight ended, (Collins was beaten to a pulp, I have never seen a face like it before or after and don't want to ever see that again) his father (suspicious) went over to congratulate Resto by shaking his gloved hands, on doing so, he noticed less padding in them, he alerted the ref and it was found out that 2 inch of padding had been removed, the trainer and the boxer were both banned. Resto served a prison sentence for this and his trainer was banned from training. His trainer got his way around this by training in a different country. Most recently Resto revealed that the hand tape was also soaked in plaster of Paris. Collins suffered blurred vision after the fight and could not fight again, he eventually drove his car over a cliff, killing him.

Although Marciano managed to squeeze out 5 million for his trouble, I think his promoter and corrupt managers pocketed a cool 30 million that they divided among themselves. Marciano would have gotten even less money had he been more naive, but more, had he not trusted them from the begining. Had Marciano been alert from the start of his career he could have walked away with 9 million.
All in all though, I think he earned 5 million from boxing, and an additional half million accumulated from public appearances following his career. If you must know the entire Marciano clan became set for life.
