How is a school gang different from Boy Scouts?

Boy Scouts don't kill people ... gangs do.

Boy Scouts don't sell drugs ... gangs do.

Boy Scouts are trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent ... gangs are not.

Boy Scouts will do their best to do their duty to God and country; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight ... gangs do not.

I turned 17 3 months ago is it to late to join Boy Scouts?

Technically, no. The maximum age for BSA is 18. Once you turn 18, you become an adult and cannot participate as a youth anymore. You can't achieve any more rank advancements or merit badges, so you have to stop wherever you're at when you turn 18.

Also, certain ranks have time limits (you must be a 1st Class Scout for 4 months before you can go on to the next rank, for example) so you will not be able to get all the ranks up to Eagle.

However, there are some options. If you don't mind not being able to get the Eagle rank, you can still join and get as far as you can in one year while learning the important things that Scouts can teach you (character, teamwork, outdoor knowledge, etc.).

You can also become an adult leader after you are 18. The Scouts always need good leaders and mentors for the boys. And you can still learn a lot of things yourself as a leader.

Finally, there is another program offered by the Boy Scouts of America called Venturing. It is for young men (and women) from age 14 to 20. It has its own awards. Here is a link: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Venturing.aspx

What does a Scout do in camping?

The function of scouts is to develop young people physically mentally and spiritually so that they may play a constructive role in society. Scouts learn skills such as self-discipline and leadership and also gain an appreciation of the outdoors. The primary objectives of scouting are as follows:

  • To encourage the physical mental and spiritual development of young people.
  • To train them in the responsible citizenship character development and self-reliance.
  • To help them develop an appreciation of the outdoors.
  • To teach them the importance of helping others.

Scouts also have a responsibility to serve the community. This can be done through community service projects such as collecting food clothing and other supplies for those in need or helping to clean up parks and public spaces. Scout leaders also help to teach scouts about the importance of civic involvement and inspiring them to take an active role in their communities.

How has the Boy Scouts of America changed over the years?

The obvious answer is that it has become more inclusive. Since its founding in 1910 it has accepted girls (as Venturers), women leaders, younger scouts (Cub Scouts), older scouts (up to age 21 as Venturers) and is now actively welcoming minorities.

It has always had a focus on building moral character and teaching values and part of that has always been a belief in God, but it now is more accepting of religions other than main stream Protestantism. In the past the BSA was supportive of the church whereas now many units (about half) are owned by churches and are seen as a mainstay of their youth programs.

People, in general today, are less in touch with nature and so the BSA's mission to teach a comfort and competence with the outdoors is both more difficult and more vital than in the past.

The image of the BSA has changed, and not necessarily for the better. It is not considered as cool as it used to be. In previous decades scouts proudly wore their uniforms to school on meeting days, which does not happen any more. Scouting is more out of line with some common cultural values than it has been in the past. Regarding homosexuals it has not changed along with the views of popular culture and regarding youth protection it is ahead of any other organizations I have seen.

If anything, its role in teaching leadership and life skills is more relevant than ever. Scouts are more likely than their non-scout peers to graduate high school, college and earn advanced degrees. They are more likely to start and lead a business. They are more likely to be class president, captain of their sports team and hold elected office. They are more likely to serve in the military and more likely to attend one of the military academies (Eagle Scouts are over-represented in the academies by over 100:1 - >10% in the academies vs. <0.1% of the population). The majority (57%) of astronauts are scouts (Eagle Scouts are over-represented amongst astronauts > 200:1). Scouts are more likely to be satisfied with their lives and their relationships. Scouts are more likely to exercise, recreate out doors, volunteer, and give to charity. They are more likely to describe their lives and relationships as satisfying and to exhibit ethical attitudes.

Where can you buy uniforms and equipment for the Boy Scouts of America?

You can buy from your local Scout Shop (sometimes called a trading post) or you can buy online from ScoutStuff.org[linked] To find a local Scout Shop, browse to ScoutStuff.org and use the Find a Location link in the top right.

If you have a financial hardship, contact your unit leader to see if they have a local uniform exchange. The BSA has requested that thrift stores such as Goodwill and Salvation Army donate uniforms to the local council and not place them for sale.

Camping gear may be purchased at most big box stores and online. Check with your unit leaders to see what activities your unit does and what gear you need.

Why does the World Scout Emblem have a Fleur de Lys?

The World Scout Emblem has a Fleur de Lis because when Lord-Baden Powell started awarding badges in the shape of the fleur-de-lis arrowhead to army scouts whom he had trained while serving in India in 1897. He later issued a copper Fleur de Lys to all the experimental camp on Brownsea Island in 1907.

When was scouts founded?

That is a not an easy question to answer.

There were several scouting movements underway in the US such as the Woodcraft Indians and Sons of Daniel Boone as early as the late 1800's.

In 1907 Lord Baden Powell of Gilwell England took his first group of boys to Brownsea Island for what he termed an experiment in scouting. He wrote "Scouting for Boys" in 1908 and is commonly credited with starting the World Scouting Movement we know today. Different sources often list either 1907 or 1908 as the date.

William Boyce brought Powell's scouting ideas over to the US after encountering scouts in England and founded the BSA in 1910. The other scouting organizations already present in the US quickly folded into the new BSA.

The first Boy Scout troop in America was organized slightly before that in Pawhuska, Oklahoma (Osage County), in May 1909 by Reverend John F. Mitchell, a missionary priest from England sent to St. Thomas Episcopal Church by the Church of England. Rev. Mitchell, who had been associated in scout work with Lord Baden-Powell in England, organized the troop of Boy Scouts under English charter and equipped them with English uniforms, manuals, and badges.

What is a rover scout?

Rovering started in the Philippines when the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) separated from the Boy Scouts of America on October 31,1936. However, following the Chief Scout's Advance Party Report in 1966, the section was discontinued in the Philippines, and was replaced by a different programme. The Advance Party Report caused some disquiet amongst some leaders who believed that Scouting was progressing away from its traditional roots, and the Philippines was no different from other organizations affected by the programme changes in the late 1960s. As with countries like the United Kingdom, this led to the creation of independent Scouting organizations which continues the traditional Rover Scout programme. In 1990, the BSP resumed a Rovering programme for men and women of 16 to 24 years in age, although there are considerable differences to the original programme. There is also a Rover Peers section for those over the age of 25. On December 12, 2004, a number of Rover Scouts and Leaders grouped together and formed the Philippine Liahona Rover Crew as an affiliate of the Rover Scout Association. The crew became affiliated with the Baden-Powell Movement of Australia (BPSA-Australia) on August 14, 2005 and started to promote traditional Scouting programme to the younger sections. In 2006, another independent group of Rover Scouts became part of the Rover Explorer Scouts Association, which is headquartered in the United Kingdom (The International HQ). This group was started as a single Rover crew on April 21, 2006 when their Rovermate and founder of the group was invested as a Rover Scouts, On the same year, the group gained a recognition as a Recognised COUNCIL or BRANCH Office of the Association in the Philippines. The Rover Explorer Scouts Association-Philippine Council was formed and recognised on August 2006. The Region has also adopted a local group from the United Kingdom, the Pathfinder Scouts Association(PSA). The Methodology, Practices, Programmes and beliefs of the Associations are based on the 1907 Original Scouting Programme and the Pre-Advance Party Report 1966. Both Associations were founded by the Filipinos who are living in the Philippines through the help and assistance of Americans, Australians and British Scouts and Scouters who believe in Traditional Scouting and the Pre-1967 scouting programme as laid down by B-P on his Rovering to Success and Scouting for Boys.
