Why did Brigham young became the leader of the Mormon church?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

After Joseph Smith was murdered, there was some controversy as to who would become the leader of the church. This is called the Mormon Succession Crisis. The Church gathered to have a conference and discuss what should be done. Already, many favored Brigham Young as he was close to the prophet and was the senior Apostle. However, Joseph's wife and several other prominent church figures disagreed. At the conference, some claimed that Brigham spoke with the voice of Joseph and understood this to be a sign that Brigham should be the next leader.

When Brigham advocated moving west, most of the church went with him. However, some, including Joseph's wife and children, stayed behind and formed the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (now called the Community of Christ) while others formed different independent branches. Some of these independent branches still exist and are colloquially known by the names of their early leaders (i.e. Strangite, Bickertonite, Cutlerite).

After arriving in Salt Lake City, Brigham Young was officially ordained as the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since that time, the senior Apostle (usually the President of the Quorum) has been considered the rightful successor.

After the prophet Joseph Smith died, Brigham Young became the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Brigham Young lead the Mormons west and guided them in settling what is now known as Utah. He is known for being a polygamist (having multiple wives), a practice that the LDS church no longer supports. Under his direction Salt Lake City was constructed, as well as a number of temples in the western United States (Salt Lake City Temple is the most well known among them). He is also noteworthy as the first governor of Utah. Up until his death he was one of the most revered of men for his faith in Joseph Smith and truth of the restored gospel.

How young can the abuser be?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most abusers grew up in an environment of abuse while young (yet 1/3 of them did not.) The abuser could have been spoiled (perhaps an only child or only son) and some could have been abused physically or emotionally by one parent or even both parents. A child has no control over such a situation so they live in fear and live in a fantasy type world to deal with this miserable situation. As the child starts to grow so does the resentment. Once out of the home they have known no other way to live and many men don't even realize they have a problem of abusing women. Women can also be abusive for the very same reasons. They can strike and lash out doing mental and physical damage to a man. Most men are brought up not to hit women so men of abusive wives often carry scars of war on their bodies. This happens more often than many people realize. As most parents know the important "molding years" is up to 6 (it's more) and children up to 12 are very impressionable. Children are basically little copy cats and react to the way their parents act as they are their mentors until they leave the home. Marcy

Through Joseph Smith, Jesus Christ restored true Christianity to the earth. Joseph Smith received his knowledge and authority from Jesus Christ and other heavenly visitors. He also translated the Book of Mormon, an ancient record, by the power of God. This book is used as a companion to the Bible.

Did Brigham young castrate his daughter?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, that would be impossible. Females cannot be castrated, because castration is the act of removing the testicles. Testicles are only found on male genitalia.

Brigham Young would not have supported any act which prevented an individual from being able to "multiply and replenish the earth", and certainly would not allow any of his children to undergo such a procedure unless it was intended as a life-saving operation due to cancer or infection.

Why was brigham young successful in keeping the Mormons safe?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Brigham Young was a very determined man. He said what he meant, meant what he said, and was not afraid to do whatever it took to accomplish his goals. He was personable and friendly, but knew when to be stern and serious, and had little tolerance for those who were not willing to be 'all in' as he was. (He often said that if people weren't willing to do this or that then they should leave rather than bring everyone else down) This attitude was a huge contributor to his success as a leader and defender of the Mormon people.

The first thing that made him successful was moving to the Salt Lake Valley. This area is surrounded by some very difficult mountainous terrain which is subject to very severe weather, meaning it wouldn't be easy for any enemies to come, and if they did, the Mormons would have plenty of time to prepare.

The second thing that made him successful was his kindness to the Native Americans who lived in the area. For the most part, the Mormons and the Native Americans got along pretty well and were united in their distrust of the US Military and others who were sent to 'keep an eye' on the Mormons.

The third was his knack for order and organization. Brigham Young did an incredible job of organizing the people, assigning them tasks, and ensuring that the whole operation ran like clockwork. Since the people were unified in working for their survival, they had all they needed to survive in the harsh climate.

Who was more important Joseph Smith or Brigham Young?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

That's a hard one. Important in what respect? In terms of importance to church history, Joseph Smith was. He restored the fullness of the gospel. Brigham Young was also a prophet though, and led the saints to Utah to escape from persecution, which was also a very big deal. ... in the end, I don't think the question is about who was most important, but just that they both had different parts to play--different things they had to do to serve the Lord. Both were important... and both were insignificant as well, in a way. God would have accomplished his purpose anyway.

Why did brigham young work as a politicains?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Brigham Young was the second prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had successfully led the migration of the church from Illinois to the Salt Lake Valley and quickly began to establish the church in the region.

Because of the persecutions the Saints had suffered and the seemingly callous disregard shown by officials of both state and federal levels of government, Brigham and the other leaders of the church determined to establish their local government more or less after the pattern established by Joseph Smith during their years in Nauvoo. This included establishing a well-organized plat system of development in Salt Lake City, a pattern which was followed by most of the later settlements throughout the new territory.

However, the government established by the Saints was more ecclesiastical than civil in the beginning. Brigham Young, as the senior Priesthood leader of the church, was its de facto political leader until the region became an official territory of the United States. It was for this reason that Millard Fillmore appointed Brigham Young as the first territorial governor of Utah.

He served in this position from early 1851 through about mid-1858 at which point a new governor was appointed to serve in his stead. From that time, Brigham Young limited himself to the affairs of the church over which he was still serving as president.
