How do you delete your computer's cache?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The reason why you have to delete the cache in the computer because it takes up to much space on your hard drive and it also slows down your computer. The way you can do this with window XP is to go into the Internet Explorer and select tools, you will see a selection where it says Internet Options, go to the general tab and delete cookies, files and offline files, go and clear history. Next step go to settings in general and view files and go to edit select all and delete. Then after this hit apply, another spot you can go to to clear cache is in the content tab - clear SSL state - auto complete - clear forms and passwords.

The cache is a small data-memory storage area that your computer accesses instantly, rather than having to re-access the original data from its original source. Once your Web browser accesses a Web page it references that page within your computer's cache. When a subsequent Web page calls for the same files, your browser loads the cached files instantly, eliminating downloading time.

Computer cache might prevent new pages from loading correctly. For instance, if you tried to view your account and received an error message, but you know your PIN and barcode numbers are correct, this is probably a cache problem. You will need to clear your cache to correct this problem. The directions below will help you clear the memory cache in your computer.

Asked by Wiki User

When you first visit a website it tells your browser to save a cookie on your computer which uniquely identifies you to the website.

When you later visit the same website it asks your browser for any cookies that the website had previously saved. The value of the cookie that identifies you is looked up in the website's database and it immediately knows your preferences, history, etc. from the database entry on you.

How can you delete your history if there is a block on it?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Among large number of privacy threats, the Index.dat files are the most dangerous and complicated ones because they are hard to find and delete. In most cases it is impossible to delete Index.dat files manually because Windows keeps them open all the time. But you also can delete them easily by some other way. You may refer to http://www.tuneup360.org/clean-index.dat-internet-explorer-7.html to learn more.

First, what do you mean by saying "there is a block on it"?

Sorry, but I have never heard that. When I need to delete internet history on my computer, I just enter the browser that I have used, go the "Tools", and delete relevant internet history.

If you mean history files like index.dat that can not be deleted manually, you might need to use a program named Privacy protector to do this. As I know, it can search and delete those hidden history files.

What are ways to reduce page load time?

User Avatar

Asked by AbegailLouiseAcosta

Clearing your browser cache and wiping all your cookies and other temporary data can help. You should be able to find this option in the settings/tools/options menu listing, although exactly where varies by browser. For example, if you are using Firefox, go to Options>Privacy>"clear your recent history". Also, check your browser addon/extension list. In Firefox, go to Add-ons>Extensions. Disable anything that you don't use. You should probably keep Adobe extensions active. You can also try another browser entirely. As you can tell from my answer, I tend to prefer Firefox and other browsers which use the Gecko engine (like Waterfox, Pale Moon, etc.). You can also try a Chromium browser, like Google Chrome (if you don't mind the potential privacy concerns), Opera, Vivaldi, SRWare Iron, or Epic Privacy Browser. Make sure your PC has enough RAM, and not too many other programs are consuming improportionate amounts of RAM and CPU resources.

How do you delete your browser history?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In Chrome, Mozilla or Explorer you can go to the icon on the top right. You can then click on history and clear.

A word of caution though - you will not succeed in removing ALL traces of what you have been up to on your computer unless you completely overwrite the entire disk. Barring that, a good computer forensic examiner will still be able to recover all sorts of artifacts that will show so much that it won't much matter if you delete your history or not. Deleting your history only prevents a casual examiner from seeing where you have been.
