Calling and Area Codes

There are two possibilities for that number.

1. It is a domestic telephone area code in your country. However, there are several countries in which 01415 or similar could be a valid domestic area code, and you didn't say which country you're asking about. For example, in the UK, 0141 is the area code for Glasgow, Scotland.

2. You left off a zero from the front and are asking about an international number. Here again it gets ambiguous, because the answer depends on what portion of the number is your international access prefix (dependent on where you are calling from) and what portion is the actual telephone country code and area code. 00 1 415 is the way many places dial +1 415, which is the area code for San Francisco, California, USA. However, 001 41 5 is the way some places would dial a number in Switzerland (country code +41), and 0014 1 5 is the way some other places might dial a number in North America (country code +1). Because of the potential for confusion, it is best to write an international telephone number in correct international format, beginning with the plus symbol and the correct telephone country code.

029 is the area code for Cardiff in the UK, and is followed by an eight digit local number.

The 029 code can be left out when dialling within Cardiff.

Cardiff numbers are commonly misquoted in the format 02920 xxxxxx, but this is incorrect and leads to misdialling of newer Cardiff 21xx xxxx and 22xx xxxx numbers. The correct format is: (029) xxxx xxxx.

You may be able to just dial the 9-digit Spanish number.

However, the most reliable way is to dial the number in full international format; for Spain, just prefix the 9-digit domestic number with country code +34 (including the plus symbol).

In the UK, area code 023 is Portsmouth and Southampton. Numbers beginning with 023 9 are in Portsmouth, but it is incorrect to quote the area code as 0239. The area code is just 023 (or international +44 23); the '9' is the first digit of the 8-digit local number.

0239 is not a valid telephone area code (STD Code) in either India (+91) or Pakistan (+92).

UK area code 01472 (or +44 1472) is Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire.

Area code 541 and overlay area code 458 serve Oregon, USA, excluding the northwestern corner.

541 & 458 includes: Bend, Corvallis, Eugene, Klamath Falls, Medford, Ontario, Pendleton, The Dalles

503 & 971 includes: Portland, Salem, Astoria, Lincoln City, Tillamook

Austria is country code +43. Note that you must omit the trunk prefix 0 from the Austrian number when calling internationally. For example, Vienna's area code 01 becomes +43 1.

Telephone country codes never begin with zero.

Country code +48, dialed as 00 48 from many places, is Poland, but there are no valid numbers beginning with +48 0. (You must drop the trunk prefix 0 from the Polish domestic area code when putting the number into international format. For example, Warsaw's area code 022 becomes +48 22.)

Country code +80, dialed as 004 80 from many places, is an incomplete code for an international service.

Country code +683, dialed as 00 683 from many places, is Niue, a self-governing territory of New Zealand.

Country code +83, which would be dialed as 006 83 from many places, is an unused code.

To call from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland, you must dial the full international number. In the case of Donegal, that means 00 353 74. (Drop the '0' from the Irish area code.) Calls from N.I. to the Republic are billed at inland rates, though, and even count as local calls if you're close enough to the border.

Calling in the other direction, from the Republic into N.I., you can use the short code 048 as a substitute for the full international prefix 00 44 28.

North American area code +1 345 is the Cayman Islands, an island nation in the Caribbean.

Although calls from the USA, Canada, and other parts of North America, to the Caymans, are dialed "one plus," the same as domestic calls, international call charges will apply.
