Karl Marx believed that the industrial-capitalist system was?
Marx believed that industrial capitalism would lead to unequal relationships between employers and employees. He believed that the situation of employees would further deteriorate as technical advances were made requiring fewer laborers.
In addition, Marx was certain that the capitalist system would lead to a workers revolution and bring about the dictatorship of the proletariat. Later this phase of Marxism would eventually lead to a world of communism. Based on Marx's science of history, it was inevitable that the events just mentioned would occur based on his "science" of human behavior.

What is a kid friendly definition of capitalism?
Basically an economic system where anyone can start their own business for their own profit. As compared to communism where the state tells you what your job will be.
Capitalism is an economic system whereby the government favours individual business achievement over social policy.
Capitalism is not a normative value, it's a thoroughly complex and complicated economic system that has its advantages and disadvantages like many other existing or proposed economic system. A simple definition of capitalism is a system where prices are established by market forces (supply and demand). Currently, in terms of economics, it's the only system empirically proven to work (as in obtaining the maximum possible output from a certain input) with such complex amounts of information, products and actors (organizations and people involved in the system) as we have in the modern world. The only other system tried instead of capitalism, which was centralized planning (where, instead of the market freely or almost freely deciding prices, there was a central planning office, alike a governmental department setting what was produced, by whom, and in what quantities and who got the resources and the finished products) proved to be far less efficient (from the same amount of materials, the output was lower then in the case of capitalism, thus people under such systems were far poorer overall as in capitalist systems).
However, capitalism does have its problems, and economists are working for more than a century to find solutions to those problems (for example of problems - how do we insert environmental concerns into markets, how do we achieve efficient distribution of goods, so that all people will be well off rather than some very poor and other very rich etc.), giving birth to control mechanisms (such as taxation, intervention etc.) and to individual blends of capitalism, specific to each country and each economic bloc (say, Sweden, France and the US are all capitalist countries, as is India and to some extent Russia, but they each possess their own individual blend of capitalism ). Others, both economists and non-economists proposed other examples of economic systems (corporatism, social-environmentalist economics etc.), but, besides capitalism and central planning, none have been empirically utilized so far.

Is capitalism as practiced in the us today the same as written by Adam smith in 1776?
Not so much. Capitalism as we know it was just starting to develop at that time, since then it has matured and is now in it's final stage of historical development, ie. it is now characterised by monopoly, imperialism and financialisation. Smith wrote about capitalism when it was just in it's infancy and had little idea of what capitalism would like like in say 100 years. Quite unlike Marx, Capital is probably more relevant now than it was in the mid-late 1800's, Smith is not very relevant anymore.
What religion led to capitalism?
The word 'capitalism' was coined about 1880 by Karl Marx to describe the way businesses were financed in the west, in contrast to his preferred system of socialism. These are economic and governmental distinctions, not religions. The economic value of his arguments is exposed by the fact that socialism was always financed by gifts from western banks, and when the gifts dwindled the regime collapsed.

Does the us have a capitalist or socialist economy?
The United States of America has a relatively free-market capitalist economy. As with all capitalist systems, the government plays a significant role in providing public goods, infrastructure, a social safety net, and large expenditures for pure research and development. The vast majority of commercial enterprises are privately-owned and operated for profit in a market economy.
Capitalism is an economic idea where the people work for the people, not the government. Individuals own businesses, land, and goods. Capitalism has flourished because individuals are working for their own good - they have money to strive for. The opposite of capitalism is communism. An example of a country who uses capitalism is the USA.
