What parakeet should you get male or female?
Both can make excellent pets. It depends on what you are looking for in a bird. If you are really big on teaching one to talk then a male would be a better choice but there is no guarantee that it will. Females can talk as well but not as clearly as a male. Otherwise I have found both genders to be easily trained and tamed and great birds to have .
What can you teach your parakeet to do?
There are a few things you can teach them to do. I know you can teach them to talk (some never talk), you can teach them to ring a little bell on one of their bird toys, and sometimes you can get them to whistle. You can also possibly teach a parakeet to fly on to your finger, as this trick is most likely tough to teach. There are probably other things you can teach them too. I suggest you research for more info. Remember to only teach them one trick at a time, more than one (being worked on for a while), can confuse your parakeet.
What does it mean when parakeets go on top of each other?
Sounds like he is attempting to mate with it.
What happens if a parakeet gets lonely?
Yes. To keep your bird from dying, you need to add another bird. Feed them well. Water them. Give them a bath with a spray bottle. Let them sleep at a certain time.
Unless the bird raised is a hand fed pet. In this case, having two birds may harm your bonding with him, and they will prefer each other over you. If you have hand-fed pet bird, playing with him and spending time with him is a good way to prevent loneliness.
How do you tell if a parakeet has a injured wing?
You use a wing clipper and clip only the long feathers so it can still fly, but not get very far without stopping. Or better yet, don't risk harming your budgie and just be very careful with opening doors and such. I have a budgie and we don't clip her wings, she can fly well, and after a year of living with us, she knows where to go and where not go, just because we care for her well and give her lots of petting and loving time.
Is your parakeet a boy or girl if the beak is yellow?
If a parakeet is young, it will have a bright pink or bright blue nose. If it is an old parakeet, it will have dark blue or brown. If a young parakeet has a bright blue nose, it is a girl. If it has a dark blue nose, it is old and it is a male.
If your parakeet laid an egg does it need a nesting box?
In the wild, most birds would find hollows in tree trunks that other animals made and nest in them. If you are trying to breed your parakeets, you will need a nesting box. Petsmart has them, make sure you get the right size, and don't get a dark colored one. That sometimes will make them ignore it.
Do parakeets eat fruit and vegetables?
no but it is best to get lettuce from the superstore and make sure to balance your bird's meal with lots of seeds, water, grains, fruits and vegetables, dont give them a lot of meat since they eat small insects in the wild
Yes, but not for long.
First, a group will form. This is known as a den or a hive. Comparable to penguins durring the winter in Antarctica, except without the sense of community. Stronger parakeets will go to the centre of the hive while weaker ones will be forced to the edges. There is no rotation, a strong parakeet will stay in the center for as long as possible. As food becomes scarce, the dead and dying will become cannibalized.
Because of this self-destructive nature, most hives collapse before spring; Without the hive to keep them warm, even the strongest parakeets sucumb to the cold.
How many times can a parakeet lay eggs in a month?
You shouldn't really look at the month but, in a YEAR, not month, not week, a YEAR it should lay 8-9 eggs. It shouldn't be laying eggs every month or else it will die. And if it is, try putting warm olive oil down where the eggs come out (which I know you wouldn't try) or take it to an emergency room.
How old is a parakeet before it lays a egg?
Parakeets reach sexual maturity around 6 months of age. But the females need to be at least 12 months old to safely rear young because at this age they are finished growing and are better equipped to handle the stresses of raising chicks. about 2 years old but I dont really know
When can parakeets have babies?
Season They Nest Hmm I'd say mainly in the spring time. Because spring is always a mating season, it is very un-usual for a budgie to have a batch of eggs in winter time, mainly they will have children in spring and fall. Age They Can Breed Well the age they should breed is from 12 months to 4 years. These ages will have a better chance of the babies being more healthier. The eggs are more fresh and not old they are new eggs so yes. Getting to the point Mainly Parakeets (household parakeets) will breed any time, more likely to breed in spring in fall like i said. Birds don't get pregnant they lay their eggs in about maybe 24 hours (ok I'm not sure about the whole 24 hours thing) Good Luck. Sincerely. Echub
Can parakeets be left alone for a long amount of time?
Last year when I went on vacation for 10 days, I gathered all my parakeets and took them to a care giver while I was going to be away. Unfortunately when I returned I discovered one of my males, (alpha male for sure) had escaped and lived in my apt. in the dark with out food or water, unless he could find it somewhere in the abyss, and he was there waiting for me when I got home. He definitely had been traumatized and I was painfully distraught that this had happened. He recovered in about a couple of months, (long time in bird's life) and found a soul mate again. Which they both have produced babies. But let me say if you leave your parakeet alone please supply this sweet bird with a companion That is the only way. They are very social and need companionship I am absolutely heartbroken this happened to my "Brucie" he did survive, I am lucky to say. kk4man@charter.net parakeet lover and breeder, (breeder? not by choice, they just can't help themselves and I am overflowing with babies!!)
Now to train your budgie not to bite it's pretty simple, put your gloves on so if he/she bites you it wont hurt. Now hold your budgie with one hand if it bites you flick it's beak (It really works) but not to hard. Then keep on doing it for 5 min. Keep on doing it every day for 5 min or more. Then if it doesn't bites anymore leave he/she alone for 2 days.
What type of foods do parakeets eat?
Mostly seeds are good. But apples, spinach, and corn are also good for budgies. Also some grass seeds are good for parakeets also. Corn is especially good because it gives the parakeet good shiny feathers.
Why would two male parakeets kiss each other?
This is normal behaviour for birds.
They are not actually "kissing" in the sense that we humans understand it.
Two male budgies are the easiest pair to keep together. Two females will likely fight, as female birds are notoriously more aggressive than male birds (but not always, for example if they were raised together then they are unlikely to fight). A male and a female bird have a 50% chance of fighting occasionally, possibly resulting in some injuries. But two males together with no female to compete over will get along like brothers, whether they're actually siblings or not.
When two birds "kiss" each other, they are showing each other acceptance and affection. It's a sign of friendship in birds, not love as it is in humans. Two birds who are also close friends will also groom each other occasionally, huddle together on the perches and snuggle together when sleeping.
They will also share food. If they have a treat for example, they will often divide it up between the two of them and eat an equal amount of the treat each.
Birds will also do the same thing to their human companions, particularly parrots like the African Grey. They're just very affectionate creatures who care for each other.
Your two males are not in a homosexual relationship with each other. It's just something that birds do with really close pals. Birds are far more intelligent than we humans give them credit for. Studies have shown that some bird species can solve intermediate problem solving tasks quicker than humans.
you do not need to give them any material the mom and dad will pick off some feathers and put them in the nest for the eggs to be you can try and give them something but they might not take it.
Why is your parakeet violent toward other parakeets?
The parakeets may feel cramped or the parakeets in the same cage may be the same gender. If you have two of the same gender, there is a greater chance of fighting because they want to be dominant over the other bird.
Is there a difference between budgies and parakeets?
Baby parakeets are tiny and have very little feathers and are not ready to be adopted into a family unless the family has a lot of bird experience. The parakeet you probably want to adopt is a fledgling, which is kind of like a teenager. Fledgling parakeets have larger heads. Adult parakeets have thicker feathers. Adult parakeets have longer tails. Adult parakeets are larger. Fledgling parakeets have stripes on their whole head extending down to their eyes. The less stripes on its head the older it is. Fledgling parakeets have black eyes and as they usually get older they get a white circle around their eyes.
All pet caged parrots and other birds should be covered at night time. Aviary birds do not need to be covered, except in cold weather. They should be uncovered during the day so they can be actively involved in the world around them.
Can you put three parakeets in one cage?
Most definantly! You could put a thousand in and it would ok! Parakeets are very social. Just make sure you have a big enough cage.......or an aviary!
Yes, and be very careful to enusre they don't. Unlike mamals (like humans) a parakeet can't sweat. The best for them to cool down is to paint. (I think that is the wrong spelling, but you know what I mean. Like what a dog does) If you want to take your bird outside (in her cage!) but them in partial shade.
What is the difference between a parrot and a parakeet?
Parakeets are a type of parrot. Parakeet refers to any species of small parrot with a long tapering tail. Some examples are budgerigars, conures, and ring-necked parakeets.
A parakeet is a smaller version of a parrot with long tail feathers.
How can you tame a mean parakeet?
That is a great question. I had the same question awhile back, if you have a new parakeet its going to be scared so if you want it to be tame just search that question because its different than the one that i am answering. How ever if you have an older parakeet that you've had for a while, I want you to think back when your parakeet was new to the environment because allot of times people get impatient and when a new bird tries to fly a natural instinct goes in our head that says hurry and catch the bird well i the birds eyes we are chasing him and we are a predator its not that likely but it can happen the bird can have issues with trusting humans so its like its scared with fear, don't worry you can break this but you have to be even more patient for about a week just sit near the cage and talk and don't put your hands in the cage at all except to feed the bird, after you do this you can gently open the cage door and just lay your hand right near the entrance not on a perch, not on anything just lay it there for at least 20 minuets if you have that amount of time, you can even read a book or watch TV. after your bird is comfortable you can gently approach the bird With some Millet or and other treat in the palm of your hand. you may want to take the birds food away for about 5 hours before trying this the reason is that the bird will be hungry and eventually will step on your hand and eat the food, treat, or millet do this about three times a week and after about two weeks of this you can gently, and slowly move your index finger or if you don't with the bird to bite use a perch, both will work then press up against the breast of the bird and say "step up" and if the bird does reward the bird with a treat and saying good boy or good girl make this a big deal because it is a big step. :) best wishes
How do you tell if your parakeet is sick?
there are many illnesses that a bird can get. a few signs are if your bird is not eating or drinking enough, if your bird is sitting at the bottom of the cage a lot/ all the time . if you see any of those symtomes then you should see your local vet. 1 other symtom of being sick is if your bird is behaving differantly to what it normaly behaves.
