Why caterpillars should not be collected in bare hands?
Caterpillars are generally covered by long bristles called setae. The setae hairs have several important uses, but one such use is to dislodge individual hairs, directed as throwing spears toward whatever creature is causing the stres; like Picking the insect up, and rolling them around your driveway Some people are more sensitive to these hairs than others. The small hairs can peirce the upper layers of the skin. This causes a phsycal reaction from the small hairs such as itching and hot skin. For those who already have allergies to foods, medications, etc. may be prone to having some sort of small localized reaction, causing even more itching and discomfort. I personally have never had any bad side effects from capturing these larva, calling them George, and playing with them constantly. I don't think that I would eat one though. Young childre may be more suseptible than adults. I'll leave it up to the parents to determine whether to allow their children to handle insects that they happen to come accross. David

What is the life span of caterpillar to butterfly?
In cool climates, most species of Lepidoptera have an annual cycle. Different species have different periods in this cycle as Caterpillars. These are tuned to the progress of the seasons in the area where they live. For Lepidoptera species that overwinter as pupae, adults, or eggs, the Caterpillars hatch and feed in spring or autumn. These Caterpillars stay only as Caterpillars for two to three weeks. A few species overwinter as Caterpillars, and these species can stay as Caterpillars for many months. At the end of their Caterpillar stage, Lepidoptera pupate for a period. For the species that overwinter as pupae, this stage can last many months. For other species this stage can last two to three weeks. In tropical climates or warm years, many species have two generations in one year, and both the Caterpillar and pupal stages are each just two to three weeks. After the Caterpillar turns into the butterfly which only lives for 2-3 days and its short life ends.

What do sphinx moth caterpillars eat?
It depends on the species. There are hundreds of types of sphinx moth caterpillars in the US alone, from tomato hornworms to Virginia creeper sphinx to azalea sphinx. A lot of them have their food plant in their name (ash sphinx, fig sphinx, hydrangea sphinx, walnut sphinx, wild cherry sphinx, beadstraw hawkmoth, elm sphinx, big poplar sphinx, etc.) but some can be misleading: the laurel sphinx doesn't like laurel, the sequoia sphinx won't eat sequoia, and the great ash sphinx will eat a wide variety of leaves in addition to ash. You should try to identify the caterpillar to species first, and then look up what that species eats. Bugguide and Moth Photographers Group have photos of almost every North American species (except tropical ones from Mexico), so that is a good place to start.
