Is milking cows good for the cow's health?
I hope she's a top-quality Holstein with great genetics and great milking ability. She also has to have given birth to great daughters and have amazing conformation for a dairy cow. If Miss "Milky" meets all of these requirements, then I'd say she would be a good keeper.
What are the types of mastitis in dairy cows?
There are two types of mastitis:
Contagious Mastitis (can be passed from cow to cow by the milking machine): Brucella melitensis, Crynebacterium bovis, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Strep. agalatiae are the common bacteria of contagious mastitis.
Environmental Mastitis (mastitis caught by bacteria in the environment): Coliform, E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella.
Can anthrax transmitted through milk of affected cow?
Anthrax is a fast-killing bacteria, that goes through the blood stream to cause chaos to areas like the brain and heart. So, yes, anthrax bacteria can be transmitted through the milk. But chances are milk quantity will decrease and the cow will be acting so strange that the calf won't be able to suckle from the affected cow. It only takes a few hours or less for Anthrax to kill a cow.
Mastitis will keep getting worse if it goes untreated, if you begin to treat in the early stage the cow will have mastitis for about a week. It will take longer to treat mastitis as it progresses.
Which is the best antibiotic for mastitis in dairy cattle?
It depends on how bad the mastitis is, when you milk her and only see a few "flakes" then apply a mint cream (such as, dynamint or udder comfort) after she has been thoroughly milked.
If when you milk her the milk looks like cottage cheese and the infected quarter is hard than you will need to treat her with an antibiotic that is inserted directly into the teat end. It is recommended that you talk to your veterinarian for the available antibiotics that are available in your area. You can also apply some mint cream as well as the antibiotic.
Hope that this helps, if you have any further questions let me know!

The cow does not have cow chops cut from its meat because of the size of the steaks that can be taken from the cow. A chop would infer a smaller size. That is why they are called steaks on a cow and not chops.
How quick can a dead cow bloat?
It depends on what it died of. Cows that died of bloat will have already bloated before death, and a cow that died of anthrax or heat stroke will bloat up within a matter of hours. A cow that died in the winter won't bloat up as readily as an animal that died in the summer, or even one that attracts scavengers within hours of death.
It's obviously sick with some stomach bug that needs a vet's attention.
What are the symptoms of blackleg in cattle?
Blackleg symptoms come up very quickly, so quickly in fact that by the time you catch them it is often too late. Symptoms include crackling of the swelled area, swelling in the shoulder, back and neck, unsteady gait when walking, lack of appetite, high temperature, and within 48 hours of being affected, death.
What causes cows to have snotty noses?
It can be a bacterial (usually) or viral (less common) infection affecting the respiratory tract that creates phlegm and excess mucus which gets up in the nasal passages. Such infections (such as pneumonia, shipping fever, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis [IBR], parainfluenza-3 [PI3], or bovine respiratory syncytial virus [BRSV]) will also cause the animals to cough excessively because there is also phlegm in the oral air passageways. Such infections or illness affect cattle quite the same way that it does for us.
Other causes, besides certain bacteria (primarily Mannheimia, Mycoplasmas, and Pasturella) or viruses, for snotty noses in cattle is dusty feed, dust by itself from excessively dry conditions, or even moldy feed. Stress from on-the-truck-weaning, transport and/or exposure to dust or pathogens from auction mart stock yards will also cause cattle--especially young cattle, not so much adults--to get sick with a respiratory illness.
How do you know if a cow in distress?
Anytime a cow is not acting/behaving normally or not eating like she should is a clear sign that she is in some sort of distress. What disease she has is associated with the signs and symptoms she's exhibiting, and this can vary from excessive drooling to kicking at the belly and laying down and getting up more than usual. It can also be a sign if she's laying down and not chewing cud, or is away from the herd just resting and not joining them to eat. Whatever the sign, it has to be abnormal from what you see her normally doing to understand that she's ill and needing your help.

Anything from rabies to a foreign object that is stuck in her mouth that she can't dislodge, or excessively dry feed she's been fed for a while. A cow will seem to froth at the mouth after she's finished licking at a salt block, which is completely normal. Besides rabies, other diseases that can cause a cow to froth at the mouth include Acute Acidosis, Acute Bovine Pulmonary Edema and Emphysema or Fog Fever, Vesicular Stomatitis, Blue Tongue Disease, Wooden Tongue, Glossoplegia, Slaframine Toxicosis, Stomatitis, Neoplasia, Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis, Hardware disease, Fescue endophyte issues (or Fescue Toxicity), Anaplasmosis, Pasture Bloat, Parainfluenza Virus 3, Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (includes pneumonia and shipping fever), Bovine Viral Diarrhea (can cause Mucosal disease which results in excessive frothing at the mouth), etc.
What medicine will help a cow to pass out the afterbirth quickly?
Medicine won't help so much as an injectible hormone will, such as oxytocin. This hormone, produced by females in order to let down milk, will aid in encouraging a cow to expel the afterbirth if it is being retained longer than it should. It would be best to talk to your local large animal veterinarian about this beforehand, however.
Anaplasmosis is a blood-borne disease caused by rickettsial bacteria of the Genus Anaplasma. It occurs more commonly in the subtropical and tropical areas and, though not contagious, can transmitted by ticks that feed on the blood of cattle. It can also be spread by contaminated needles, dehorning equipment, castrating knives, tatooeing equipment and biting flies and mosquitoes.
What can you give a cow to relieve pain?
Aconitum spp works well. It's a very effective pain reliever to livestock.
What are some signs that a cow is sick?
One of the best, and earliest, indicators of a cow's illness is a change in either what's going in or what's coming out. An observant farmer will have a good mental history of what his herd's manure looks and smells like, including color, consistency, fragrance and volume. Any change to this can indicate an infection or nutritional problem in the herd. Also, farmers keep close tabs on how much and what kind of feed and water their cows are consuming - a sick cow will often eat less or even nothing at all, and this decrease will show up in a visual surveillance of the feed bunk.
Other signs of illness in cows include increased heart rate and/or respiratory rate, lack of rumination (not chewing cud, no gut sounds), lethargy, unusual posture or gait, and general appearance of "not normal".
What would cause a calf to have green feces?
Green grass. And that's nothing to worry about, because it's completely normal.
Can a mollasses block make a cow sick?

She might be drunk LOL OK maybe not but doesn't sound good may need to be put down by a competent Vet and a call to the knacker man. I would not even consider the butcher shop.
