Does Catholic charities provide nursing homes for the mentally ill?
Every diocese in the Catholic Church is a particular Church and not subject to any higher authority (other than God, and His representative on earth - the Pope), so you would have to contact the diocese that you are concerned with and ask them if they have a nursing home, etc.
Please explain the difference between a 'for-profit' company and 'non-profit' company?
Non-Profit Companies - These are companies that do not redistribute profits to shareholders or even to the owners. In their company goals, they discuss pursuing their corporate mission (i.e. Making another fundraiser, another public class, something that is for public good). Some examples of these are charitable organizations and most government agencies.
For-Profit Companies - These are companies that redistribute their profits to their shareholders (stock holders). These are companies that follow a corporate mission of making money for their shareholders and look out for themselves (more self interest). These types of companies can be public (trading stocks) or privately (solely owned by the owners) held.
A shoe company called Tom's makes shoes and for every pair you buy they send one to a kid in Haiti, or somewhere where kids are in need so anything given to them will go towards helping out the kids. This may not be exactly what you were looking for but I hope it helps anyway.
No. Even Bupa is private company limited by guarantee, it does distribute profits to members, so it is not a charity.

Free the Children was started by Craig Kielburger when he was only a preteen. He had seen a newspaper article about a boy named Iqbal Massih, an escaped child slave that had been murdered for standing up for his rights. Craig started Free the Children with other classmates and it has grown to where it is today. His brother, Mark Kielburger is also deeply involved with Free the Children.
