Gad's Hill Place was the residence of Charles Dickens, who wrote "Bleak House" but the novel was not set there. The inspiration for Bleak House is said to be a combination of Dickens's summer residence in Broadstairs and various real-life locations in London.

In the book, Dickens descrbes the ghost of Christmas past as having a child-like face, but an old persons long white hair. It is bare footed and has a bright, candle-like beam of light coming out of its head ,and a hat under its arm so it can shut off the light when needed.
