When do you start tummy time in an infant?

Tummy Time should begin as soon as you're home from the hospital. This way, baby learns to accept it as part of their regular routine. Since TT can help prevent developmental delays by strengthening neck, arms and core muscles, it is an important part of baby's day while awake. Start in small spurts and gradually work up to longer periods of time. For tips on how to get started, check out this website from Pathways Awareness: http://bit.ly/8IhuuF.

Im 14 yrs old and think I need to be circumcised what should I do?

This is a discussion you should have with a trusted adult and your doctor. No doubt you have done some research on the topic and have come to a conclusion as to why you feel you should be circumsized. Take a moment to write down your reasons, this will help you order your thoughts and make a case. Understand that a doctor is not going to undertake circumcision lightly at your age. He or she is going to want to understand what your motivation is, whether for medical, religious, cosmetic or other personal reasons. The doctor will need to balance your request against the possible risks of surgery and assess whether it is something you really need. Try to anticipate some of the questions your doctor may have for you, and prepare your answers. If you present your argument in a clear, well thought out manner, the doctor is more likely to trust your input and make a favorable recommendation when talking to your parents. EDIT!!

You can be circumsized at any age, it is less painfull when u are young though, my grand dad had it done when he was in hs 40's which he said hurt alot, so it would be best to get it done now than when ur 40

Should young children be placed in day care?

It depends. In my experience, parents who put their children in day-care have more time to work, and so have more money; whereas parents who watch after children themselves are ultimately closer to their children.

Im a mum of a 2 and a half year old and she is scared of rubber gloves What should i do to show her there is nothing to be afraid of and how can i help her overcome her fear?

My baby was afraid of a hair dryer due to an innocent incident at the hair dresser. It took me one year do undo the damage: let her watch from afar when I am using it, do not force her to be near it, or use it, or touch it. In time she will approch the "thing" by herself. Let her touch it then, not before she shows signs of being ready. Be patient, act normally around rubber gloves, don't make an issue out of this, she will overcome the fear in time. The more attention you give to her fear, the worse it will become.

How can you get your baby to sleep?

Babies go to sleep in different ways. One would rock to sleep in her father's arms when her mother finally stopped talking. One would let a parent sing him to sleep. One fought it and then his father read a story book. The baby listened and fell asleep. One baby fell asleep when a parent placed him in his crib. Many fall asleep at the breast. There is no one size fits most when it comes to getting a baby to sleep. However, when something works with a particular baby, it will frequently continue to work.

Additional Tips from the Sleep Lady below:

Most babies under 18 weeks of age need us to help soothe them to sleep whether that means we hold, rock or feed them to sleep. Sleep begins to develop and deepen around 4 months of age and you may begin to see a larger block of sleep at night (4-6 hours). Naps develop in the next few months so do what you can to help them nap well whether thans holding, rocking, feeding or wearing your baby to sleep.

When you try to get your baby to sleep is an important point also. Watch the clock and your baby for their sleepy cues. Newborns can often only be awake for 1.5-2 hours before becoming tired again. Babies 6months to 12months can be awake for 1.5-3 hours from wake up in the morning to morning nap and 2-3 hours in between naps and finally 4 hours between afternoon nap and bedtime. A typical bedtime for a baby over 5months of age is around 7-7:30pm. Getting your baby's natural bedtime will help them go to sleep more easily.

What if a fetus does not have a heartbeat at 11 weeks?

At 11 weeks unless you are probably unable to hear the heart beat of a fetus with a standard stethoscope. You should be able to pick it up on the Ultra Sound Equipment in your Doctor's Office. Your doctor should also have other equipment that can also pick it up. Most people do not have that equipment in their homes. Your fetus should have had a beating heart for nearly six weeks now. When it started beating, only super sensitive amplifiers could pick it up. Not even ultrasound could get it. Now it is coming into the range where ultrasound can find it. You will need to see your doctor to check the ultrasound or if your doctor told you the fetus does not have a heart beat ask what to do. At about 21 weeks you should be able to hear the heart beat with a regular stethoscope.

Why children have more flexible joints than adult?

They have more flexible joints because the younger children are the less their bones and joints have formed. Because they are so unformed, the bones are also able to stretch. If you don't practice as you grow older the bones and joints form fully and grow stronger and you lose your flexibility. After this it is harder to become flexible. On the other hand because your bones and joints are not formed properly yet they not only are flexible but can also break easily and then heal quickly too. It's ironic. You can bend incredibly, but break easily, and then you heal easily.

Is it normal for a parent to feel unneeded once his or her children have grown up and are autonomous?

you are used to the feeling of always beeing needed by your kids. As they grow up that "need" starts not to get smaller but the needs start to chage. Dont worry they still need you to be there for them, just in different ways. It is normal to feel that way, dont worry you are still being a good parent :), i am a therapist and a lot of parents ask me this question. Dont worry you are not alone . if you need more on this just let me know.

How do you discipline a child with Reactive Attachment Disorder RAD?

Well - the short answer is - VERY differently than you might discipline a healthy child!

Some important facts to remember about your RAD child:

1. Any child with attachment disorder feels horrible about himself.

2. Your child feels some level of emptiness inside - like a large cavernous hole in his heart that he constantly is trying to fill. He tries in so many destructive ways because his brain never received the proper wiring that tells his heart he can trust you to love and care for him and provide for all of his needs.

3. Your child loathes himself which is why he can not seem to attach to you.

In my therapy experience, it is crucial that you do not discipline your child in a way that makes him feel worse about himself than he already does. This creates quite a challenge of course as these kids normally express such intense behaviors that almost force the parents to react. Discipline needs to focus solely around natural and logical consequences, and be underpinned with the consistent message of love and trust. You MUST do all you can to remain unaffected by his games... which I understand is extremely difficult. But when you can step back and understand why he feels and acts the way he does, it gets easier. Also - these kids are always trying to pass their emotional baggage off on to you and other family members. When they toss a bad feeling your way - just treat it like a hot potato and toss it right back. A competent therapist is a MUST to help you/him work through the difficult feelings and learn how to rebuild his life story into an accurate picture of what happened to him [and why he feels so bad.]

What strategies can you adopt to help children feel welcome and valued in the setting?

Bring them things that they like. If you don't have enough money, which is okay, then make sure to talk to them or do things with them that you think they would like. If they like swimming go to the pool, if they like cooking make cookies with them. Tell them that you love them and try not to get mad at them. DO NOT yell at them! That makes most kids back off and make them think they are not valued. Always listen to their side of the arguement, and make them feel valued. Remember, the small things that you do and say will be best. Always say thank you when they do something for you, whether it is big or small.
