What can you expect from a beagle chow chow mix?

My dog, Carson, is a 3 year old Chow / Beagle Mix. DNA tests showed that he is 40% chow and 40% beagle with a bit of pincher, grey hound, and setter. He's been quite a handful to say the least. He's a great dog. Carson is very friendly, yet shy at first with strangers, however, he is easily won over. He is great with children, however, shy with other dogs. He requires a good amount of exercise which he gets, yet he still has a bit of a weight problem even with me watching his diet and frequent exercise. On major problem that I've had with him is that he has developed severe separation anxiety. He's very destructive when left home alone. It's an ongoing problem that I have yet to solve. I brought him home when he was 5 weeks old, too early but he was a rescue from petsmart. When I found him there he was huddled in a corner of a large pen by himself with Brittany's all around him. I felt bad for him naturally and picked the only red dog in the pen :) Long story short, from day one he didn't take well to being in a crate. I have continued to try to crate train him and its a huge failure. He injures himself and I have given up on it. The last straw was when I came home from work and he had gotten his head stuck through the bars and wasn't breathing well. His snout was rubbed raw and bleeding. It was not a good sight. Without being able to crate him I looked into other options. He is now on meds, but they are doing nothing. I'm trying to train him along with the meds but its not working. Even though he is a very intelligent dog, he's also a very stubborn one. He listens to commands and is easy to train. I didn't even have to house train him, from day one he just knew outside is where he is supposed to do his business. Overall, the chow / beagle mix is a wonderful pet. Patience and determination is key if you encounter problems like mine. Hope this is somewhat useful to you!

Are chow chow puppies born with solid blue-black tongues?

Chow puppies are not born with a blue tongue. It is pink at birth, as is the nose and pads of feet on most colors of the breed (red, blue, cream, cinnamon (looks silverish at birth with tan undercoat will be the color of beach sand normally as an adult) except for blacks. Their pigment start to come in around 2 weeks and should be completely in by 8 weeks. Sometimes a little longer. If there are pink spots on the tongue or a lighter nose by that time, that is normally how they will stay. That does not mean in anyway that the puppy may not be purebred. That is another discussion about genetics. To give you a short answer, its like a birthmark in reverse.

Why do chow chow's have blue tongues?

Honestly, no one knows. It was once believed that the Chow Chow was related to bears in and around the area of China, Mongolia and Manchuria who also shared the blue black tongue. However, genetic testing reveals that the Chow Chow is 100 percent canine. This particular trait is only shared by the Chinese Shar-Pei. It has been also theorized that it may have been genetic mutation. This may well be one of Mother Nature's many mysteries that we shall never truly know.
