Paul had many flashbacks. The first one in the very beginning of the book was how someone was chasing him in a car while he was on his bike. The passenger was leaning out of the passenger side window with a baseball bat wearing a ski mask. The person tried to drive by and hit him on the head with the bat but ball ducked and the car roared by. When Paul got home he told his parents that Erik tried to kill him but Erik was sitting in the dining room doing his homework. His parents just thought that is eye sight wads bad.

Another flashback, out of the many that there are, was probably the most important in the book. Paul remembered what caused his blindness. He remembered that Erik and his friend, Vincent Castor, sprayed him in the eyes with white spray paint when he was five. His parents had known this all along but didn't tell Paul because they feared he would hate his older brother.
