Clara Barton saved thousands of soldiers and was a Civil War Nurse. She was against slavery, and for womens rights. She started the American Red Cross program.
Clara Barton is the founder of the American Red Cross. She also worked in many government offices and tended to many wounded and sick soldiers.

there were more hospitals and during the civil war, soldiers lives were saved because of her and that's when she earned the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield".

She was a clerical worker at the US Patent Office in Washington DC. Prior to moving to Washington, she had lived in Massachusetts. She moved south for health reasons.As an aside, it was in Washington that she met accomplished US poet Walt Whitman.

Clara's sisters taught her complementary skills, since her older sisters were teachers. Clara's brothers taught her how to ride horses and other things that at the time were only appropiate for men.

A lot of wounded soldiers lived because of the medical assistance that she directed, and personally provided.

Clearly two major events were extremely important to Clara Barton. One was her volunteering to aid wounded soldiers from both sides in the US Civil War, and the other was her founding the American Red Cross.

Clara Barton started her public school in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

During Clara Barton's childhood, it was considered unladylike for women to play many sports. However, Clara grew up with several male cousins and enjoyed roughhousing, games, and horseback riding. After an injury, Clara's mother brought in a female cousin to help teach her more feminine pastimes.

She was born in North Oxford, Massachusetts as the youngest of 5 siblings on December 25th 1821. she had 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Her parents were Stephen Barton and Share Stone Barton.
