Following the Baltimore Riots, upon the sixth Massachusetts Regiment arriving in Washington, it was I who organized a relief program for the soldiers, starting my lifelong career as a nurse and humanitarian. I am a strong and independent woman; and one morning I had to face a difficult decision I helped save a 'negro' from Slavery, I hid him in my woodshed and I had helped him into freedom. I stopped being a teacher; a man took over our school so I decided that I would be head nurse in the Civil War. I left for Europe a little while after and I began to learn about the Red Cross. I disliked the way Soldiers were treated. I became President of the Red Cross until 1904.

YES-Clara actually had a pet dog named Button, which had white fur, black eyes, and a little tail. Clara would teach him to beg, sit, and he would sleep with her at night. She also had a couple horses.

Soon the Union was letting her ride in the medical carts with the wounded. She helped as a nurse and tried to keep them possitive. Then she became a nurse and obtained the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield". There she founded The Red Cross and was president of the Red Cross before retiring and dying.

Clara worked very hard to improve treatment to women. Women were not treated with respect or given equal opportunity. They were kind of thought to be worse than men and dumb.(which in my opinion make the people thinking that dumb.) Susan B. Anthony and Clara Barton made a good, strong team to stand up for what is right. To stand up for equal rights for men and women. They picketed outside of the White House for a long time. Woodrow Wilson ignored them as they asked to be treated the way they deserve. Officers from Washington, D.C. arrested the women picketing for "obstructing traffic."(when they only just stood outside the White House gates picketing for their rights and for America) They were sent to jails and refused to eat. They began force feeding the women. They truly were dedicated to helping the USA. Thank them for their contributions to our nation that was once so troubled.
