Can you keep a cockatiel in a parakeet cage?

Parakeet cages are generally very small, so I wouldn't recommend it. A rule of thumb is that a bird must have a large enough cage to be able to fully spread his wings, and it must be deep enough so that the bird's tail isn't damaged. Unless the parakeet cage in question is fairly large, then it should be fine. Also remember that the smaller of a cage you buy for your cockatiel, the more out-of-cage time you should provide him.

Your cockatiels bird lays eggs but never hatch but you dont know why?

First of all determine if the egg could be fertile. (like if there is a male and female together) Cockatiels are notorious for excessive egg laying. Make sure she is getting plenty of calcium. (Either a cuttlebone, grit, or something along those lines. keep her in an area that has more activity. Those are just a couple suggestions to get you started.

How old should a cockatiel be before you handle it?

Answer I agree that you should tame then when they are just weaned because when you take them out at birth they have to be fed every 2 hours by you which takes up alot of your timeIf you mean have it as a pet, than 4 months, but as a breeder, you can handle from the moment the mom lets you. Dpn't quote me on that though. ask experts. AnswerIt is best to handle a cockatiel when it is weaned (can live and feed on its own). Otherwise, before that, it is slightly too young for any training. But if you just want to raise it, you can start whenever. If the cockatiel is too old, it most probably has picked up both good and bad habits. When it is (just) weaned, it is still free from any habits and at the same time, not too young to train. Answersince it is born AnswerThey can' be handled as soon as they are hatched, even to hand feeding them, it will help them bond with people

Answer

I've got 3 chicks now. Handle them as soon as the parents let you. I change the nest box every day and interact with them, hold them and talk to them. Although I let the parents feedthem , they have gotten used of being handled and interacting with me. Love them...Good luck.

How do you tell if a cockatiel has a broken leg?

first of all what has he done to his leg? If it is seriou, he needs to see a vet. A vet will probably prescribe him with some painkillers. Just make you pamper him and when you are cuddling him, stroke his leg and see how much it seems to be hirting him. He might just need a bit of TCL! Our COCKATIEL WAS FINE AFTER A BIT OF FUSS!

What you feed a cockateil is bird food. Go into your local petstore and purchase a bag that says Cockatiel or Parakeet food. Cockatiels can also eat vegetables such as lettuce, and fruits like apples as a treat occasionally.

Can you leave your cockatiel alone for a week?

Its not really a good idea. Even if you leave enough feed and water you never know what will happen. The seed could get knocked down and then its water dumped on it rendering it inedible. Even if all went well the cage will be filthy and that is simply not a healthy situation. Your bird might sort out how to open the cage doors, yes it has happened, then your bird has free reign. Who will cover the cage at night? What if they get sick and need a vet?

Birds are like small children; you never know what will pop into their heads to do next. You wouldn't leave a small child home alone for a week with lots of food and liquid available would you?

Get a friend to come in at least once a day to look after your fid, board them at a pet store or vet, contact a dog walking/house sitting service to see if they will come and see your friend.

Do not leave them alone for an extended time.

Cockatiels and budgies can get along perfectly together if given enough space. You need to make sure their cage is big enough or else they may fight which is bad news for the budgie!

Will the parent cockatiel have anything to do with the young cockatiel if i touch the young cockatiel?

the parent cockatiels will protect their youngster no matter what is in their way

they will even die to protect their baby[s]

It is inadvisable to touch a very young cockatiel. Sometimes the parent bird will reject the young chick if it has been touched by humans. Wait until the bird is a young fledgling, as this is a safer time.

Is it dangerous to eat paper?

Haha!

Well Honestly, I don't know why, but I have caught myself eating paper and cardboard all the time.

I am 14 years old, and I haven't really seen any side affects.

My friends are always asking

"WHY ARE YOU EATING THAT PIECE OF PAPER?!"

And Honestly I couldn't tell them why.

^_^!

My point is....

No.

I don't think it is dangerous to eat paper.

Maybe if you eat a notebook.

There are dyes in paper, but I don't think there is enough to make you sick.

I actually looked at your question because I started eating a piece of paper and thought about it.

I HOPE I HELPED!!

Bye!

What toys do cockatiels like to play with?

A parakeet would probably like the following: a medium sized ball, a swing, a rope, and a bell. Be careful to not buy a too small toy, as it can be swallowed. These all can be toys and probably can be bought at a local pet store such as Pet Smart or elsewhere. Also keep in mind a second parakeet can keep the parakeet company, or some large toy would work too. Happy shopping! :)

Are cockatiel bites dangerous?

If a little bird bites you the worst it could do is leave a little scar. But if a big bird bites you like a amazon or cockatoo, they could bite of your finger! But birds aren't poisonous, and they won't attack you unless you get too close to their nests or you attack them.

Why does your cockatiel hump his perch?

It is possible that the claws may be too long and need to be clipped. Special clippers for birds can be purchased from most pet stores, however care must be taken not to cut through the quick of the nail.

Alternatively, vets offer to clip nails of different animals safely for a small fee.

Ways to avoid nails growing to long can be to provide at least one branch with a birdsafe sandpaper cover (also found at most pet stores) which can help file down the nails on a daily basis without causing the bird any distress.

I don't suggest covering every branch, however, as it can cause some discomfort to the soles of their feet.

What do you do when you think your cockatiel is pregnant?

Cockatiels are birds. Birds do not get pregnant, as reproduction is done through the laying of eggs. The eggs take about three weeks to form properly in the body, but this is not called "pregnancy". They look the same when they are laying eggs as when they aren't. In other words, birds don't "hold" their eggs inside their bodies and show a big belly to indicate that eggs are on the way. The egg shell is the last thing that develops right before the egg is laid, therefore, a hen doesn't "show" in the sense that human women "show" when they are pregnant.

Cockatiels which are getting close to laying an egg become more lively, excitable and playful, not listless and quiet. If they have a nesting box, they will spend a lot more time in the box, preparing it for nesting, and possibly being very protective of that area. If there is a male, he may start feeding the female.

A cockatiel with a swollen abdomen is not a sign of of a bird about to lay an egg. It is either eating too much of a high-fat diet (common among birds with a seed-only diet) or it has a tumor. Swelling in the abdominal area could also mean the parrot is egg-bound, though this tends to present more as swelling near the bird's tail, near the cloacae. She will be distressed and show signs of constipation, be reluctant to move and "waddle" like a penguin. If your bird shows signs of being egg-bound, she must be taken to the vet as soon as possible, as this can be a life-threatening condition.

What is the best way to teach a cockatiel to perch on your finger?

Answer

put the back of your finger on the birds' chest and slide it down to a little bit above the feet and your parakeet should climb on to your finger

Can you pick up your cockatiel?

You can pick up a cockatiel whether it is hand tame or not. This does influence how you pick it up, though. If your cockatiel is hand tame, you just put it on your finger, your arm, your shoulder, etc. and it just sits there happily. When it is not hand tame, you have to pick the cockatiel up by its back with your index finger and middle finger around its head. On the internet, look up ways to hold an untame cockatiel and find a diagram so that you pick your cockatiel up correctly if it is untame.

Are cockatiels omnivores?

Cockatiels do not eat meat. They eat vegetables and seeds.

Can cockatiels eat sunflower seeds?

Yes, of course they can. They split open any type of seed like that and eat the inside of them. It's not good to only give them sunflower seeds to eat without a mixture of a balanced diet. Such as: 30% seed mixture the rest in pellets and fresh vegetables.

(comment edited by Tylor)

Although they can eat sunflower seeds.. it isn't good for them, Most birds when they eat sunflower seeds make them extremely mean, you can search it on many sites.

NEXT ANSWER:

The first cockatiel I owned died from fatty liver disease, caused by eating too many sunflower seeds (according to my vet). It should not be a significant part of their diet.
