Why cant women be color blind?

Women can be colour blind.

Answer

I am a woman who is red--green colorblind. The trait is carried on the X chromosome. Males receive an X chromosome from their mother and a Y from their father. If the X carries the trait of colorblindness, the male will be colorblind. Females need to receive two defective X chromosomes to be colorblind, one from their father and one from their mother. If a women has only one defective X chromosome, she will be a carrier of the trait. My father was red-green colorblind and so was my mother's father, making my mother a carrier of the trait, although she is not colorblind herself. I have two sisters who are not colorblind, as they each received a non-defective X chromosome from my mother. I knew before my son was born that he would be red-green colorblind, as the X chromosome he received from me carried the trait.

Where was the first color discovered?

Isaac Newton contribution to our understanding of color:

Today understanding of light and color begins with Isaac Newton. Isaac Newton was born January 4, 1963 in Woolsthrope, Lincolnshire. He died March 31, 1727 in London. At this time, England hadn't adopted the Georgian Calendar (they didn't until 1752), so technically he was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1642. He was born the same year in which Galileo had died. Newton was born prematurely, almost 15 weeks early and he was so small that he wasn't expected to live. He published a series of experiments that he did in 1674. He was the first to understand the rainbow; he used the white light with a prism resolving it into its component colors. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Violet. In the late 1660's, Newton started to experiment with his "celebrated phenomenon of colors." At this point in history people thought that color was just a mixture of light and darkness, and that the prism colored the light. Hooke the proponent of the theory had a scale that went from brilliant red which was pure white light with the least amount of darkness added, to dull blue, the last step before black, which was the complete extinction of light by darkness Newton found out this theory was wrong.

He went up to his chamber and shut out all the light except a little tiny bit then he put the first prism in front of the white light and saw a rainbow spectrum appear 22ft. away on the far wall. This phenomenon had often been observed before, but it had always been related to latent color that was said to exist in the glass of the prism. Newton took this simple experiment a step further. He passed his miniature rainbow through a second prism; and instead of turning into all the colors of the rainbow again it stayed the same color.

His conclusion was revolutionary: Color is in the light, not in the glass, and the light people see as white is a mixture of all the colors of the visible spectrum. Newton discovered that light behaves a lot like waves, bending around objects, much as water flows around them. When light strikes a prism, the different waves of color are bent to different angles, which create the rainbow spectrum we see. Red light bends the least and violet light bends the most. Newton discovered this when he was only 22.

How can you define color blue to a blind person?

Describing blue to a blind person would be difficult unless they were not born blind. Having no knowledge of what colors look like, or objects for that matter, you could not pose the idea, "blue looks like the sky." or "blue is the color of the ocean." unless the blind person has seen the sky or ocean before.

...But maybe they could understand that blue is the color of raindrops that fall on your skin.

What part of the eye does not work correctly if you are color blind?

There are two kinds of light receptor in the retina of the human eye. The rod cells work in dim light and do not distinguish colors. The cone cells operate in ordinary light conditions and they distinguish colors. My mnemonic trick to keep the rods and cones straight is to think of several cones of ice cream, naturally of many different colors. Color blindness has to do with the various processes of light perception by the cone cells. But color blindness is a more complex condition than you might think.

Can color blindness be treated or cured?

There is no cure for color blindness at present. There are colored lenses that can be used to help distinguish certain colors, but they are impractical for daily use.

Some researchers at the University of Washington were able to cure red-green colorblindness in monkeys using gene therapy, but it will be a while until such treatments will be ready for humans.

Is a color blind person disabled?

No, but it can put limits on jobs they can pursue - obviously they cannot work in fields where color identification is vital to performance.

Are all women carriers of color blindness?
