Confucius is relevant to our lives today because his sayings relate directly to us and how to live happier and more fulfilling lives.

Confucianism (Chinese: 儒家; pinyin: Rújiā) is a Chinese ethical and philosophical system developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius (Kǒng Fūzǐ, or K'ung-fu-tzu, lit. "Master Kong", 551-479 BC). It focuses on human morality and wrong action. It is a complex system of moral, social, political, philosophical, and quasi-religious thought that has had tremendous influence on the culture and history of East Asia. It might be considered a state religion of some East Asian countries, because of governmental promotion of Confucian values.

Taoism arose in China shortly after the arrival of Buddhism. Many of the beliefs, such as reincarnation, are similar. Taoists say they believe in all the Buddhist gods, but Buddhists do not believe in all the Taoist gods.

Both Buddhism and Taoism have philosophical branches that are essentially not theistic, as well as religious branches. At a superficial level, Buddhist and Taoist temples are generally quite similar. Both religions have traditions of sacred caves, particularly Taoism. Buddhism is noted for its monumental statues of the Buddha.

A major difference in the two religions is that Tao priests are relied on to foretell the future and provide guidance for future actions.

Confucianism focuses on the development of good society where peace and order are preserved between individuals and the government.
Originally Confucianism could have been described as an ethical and philosophical system developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius who lived around 551-479 BCE. Later developments took confucianism into metaphysical and cosmological areas of understanding.

Confucianism believes that "only when there is a country that there is family; and only when there's family that there is individual". In a family, children are taught to be respectful to the elderly from young, and other aspects of ren(benevolence)and li (rites). What they are taught at home is applied to interactions with others in the society. If everybody can behave as his roles dictate, then there are harmonious relationships, whether it is in a family, a business organization or a country. With that, peace and prosperity ensue.

Confucianism may have gotten its name from a man named Confucius, but he is not the founder. There is no founder of Confucianism. There are also no current leaders (such as the Catholic Pope). It is more like a moral code or way to live life than an organized religion (even though technically, it is a religion).

Confucianism is not really a religion. It does not have a god (s) to be worshipped. More exactly it might be called a secular ethical philosophy.

It has rites and traditions but these are aimed at focussing thinking and teaching proper behavior. Much time is given to relationships such as filial piety, loyalty, and how to be both human and a gentleman.

They both believe that nature is wicked and that people do good if they are forced to do it.

Confucianism values education because through it, the human capacity to improve is witnessed. The philosophy does not describe human nature as permanent, but rather highly malleable. This means, they humans are all born in a similar way, but it is only through acquiring education and understanding that we grow into beings who come close to understanding our world.

As part of that order, Confucian thought stresses that there are proper roles, which let everyone in the society know where they fit in on the social hierarchy. For example, a father is superior to a son; a husband is superior to a wife; a ruler (king, emperor) is superior to his subjects. Confucius also stressed that children have a duty (called "filial piety) to respect and obey their parents. But filial piety is also extended to say that the living have a duty to show respect for their ancestors, since it is thanks to the ancestors (who gave birth to us) that we are here today. Thus, knowing and accepting one's place in the society and showing respect for parents and ancestors are essential tenets of Confucian thought.

Filial piety is definitely essential to the proper practice of Confucianism. Confucius was a believer in knowing one's place within the social order; he believed this would lead to harmony and peace. As Confucius saw it, the social order was comprised of five basic relationships-- a king or emperor was superior to his subject, a father was superior to his son, a husband was superior to his wife, an elder brother was superior to a younger brother, and a parent was superior to a child.

Confucius stressed that children have a duty (called "filial piety") to respect and obey their parents. But filial piety was more than that. It was also extended to say that the living have a duty to show respect for their ancestors, just as a child shows respect to a parent. It is thanks to the ancestors (who gave birth to us) that we are here today, and they must be remembered and shown proper deference. Given that Confucianism is a way of life, even in modern and secularized China, children are still taught the doctrine of filial piety, and people in the society at large still remember and show respect for the memory of their ancestors.

* There are some young people that have been brought up the right way by their parents to respect their elders, but unfortunately some young people don't appreciate the elderly or feel that person is of any use in the fast paced modern world of today, yet there are many young people that go out of their way to listen to the wisdom of the elderly or take a true interest in the stories the elderly people may have to tell about their past and often times it's worth listening too as elderly people were young once too and many accomplished a great deal in their lives and wisdom is the key to success. In fact, in Canada they are asking retired people to think about going back to work in the capacity of their previous jobs to teach the 'green people' how to do their job. It's a great idea and one that will mesh both the young and old ideas to make for an almost perfect solution to any business problem. There are also many young people who visit the elderly in the nursing homes on a volunteer basis. It helps to keep in mind that 'all' of us ... will get old and it's important to be respectful and considerate of those around you that may be old as you 'reap what you sow.' The elderly are generally very wise and have some fantastic stories of life to share with the young if given half a chance.

Followers of Confucianism have to bide by the tradition known as Filial Piety. This means that everyone has to show respect for their elders. Other than this, Confucianists must maintain their social status; they can't try to move up the social ladder to be anything more than they already are. Confucius believed in the Merit System, the idea that there are rewards for good deeds.
