The constellation representing the pet of Leda, a figure from Greek mythology, is Canis Major. Canis Major is often associated with Leda's faithful dog named Maera.

The common name for Scorpius is the Scorpio constellation.

Capricornus - the Sea Goat. His upper half is a Goat while his lower half is a fish. The planet Jupiter rises tonight a little before 10:00pm in Capricornus (in the Northern Hemisphere). It's currently July 19th 2009 - if you receive this answer soon, go outside around 11:30 pm and look in the South East - Jupiter is the brightest thing in the sky. It's also currently passing through Capricornus' fish tail - so to see the "sea goat", just look to the right of Jupiter (and slightly below) - if your sky is dark enough (no light pollution) you'll see a group of stars that look like a triangle, pointing to the ground, that looks like it got slightly squashed. In modern astronomy, a constellation is an internationally defined area of the celestial sphere. Historically, the term was also used to refer to a perceived pattern formed by prominent stars within apparent proximity to one another, and this practice is still common today. Most constellations are named after Greek Gods, Animals, ect.

Stars in constellations appear to move across the sky because of the Earth's rotation on its axis. As the Earth rotates, different stars come into view while others disappear over the horizon. This creates the illusion of movement within constellations.

Cassiopeia is a prominent constellation in the northern sky. It is located close to the North Star (Polaris) and can be seen year-round in the northern hemisphere. Cassiopeia is named after the queen in Greek mythology.

The major stars in Orion include Betelgeuse, Rigel, Bellatrix, and Saiph. These stars are some of the brightest and most prominent in the constellation, and they help form the distinctive shape of Orion in the night sky.

All constellations are imaginary diagrams formed by patterns of many stars - each one it's own unique distance from Earth. So a constellation isn't a particular distance from Earth - as the stars only look like they're next to each other from our perspective here on Earth.

Orion is best seen in the winter sky, if you are in the northern hemisphere. And you can see Orion in the Northern Hemisphere in the eastern sky just before sunrise. I'm amazed that everyone keeps saying that Orion is only visible in winter! Wake up, literally, go outside before sunrise on a clear morning and look east...ta-duh..Orion!

The shape of a constellation appears not to change because the stars within the constellation are extremely far away from Earth, so their positions relative to each other appear fixed. Even though the stars are moving through space, the vast distances involved make their movements imperceptible to us on Earth within a human lifetime.

The Southern Cross and Orion's Belt (and the rest of the Orion constellation) are usually in the southern hemisphere's sky.

You can see Venus quite a bit too, but it's not a constellation.
