Is corn syrup a molecular or ionic compound?

Defenitely not ionic. It is a very soluble mixture of many (polar) hydrophylic sugar compounds (glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltose, maltodextrins etc.) and water (being a syrup!).

So it is not even a molecular compound, whatever that may be!

Why is corn syrup denser then water?

Because water can dissolve sugars without the volume increasing. So if you have one cup of water, you can add sugar, salt, or corn syrup solids into it and they will dissolve; but it will still only be one cup, unless you add a lot. Note before it dissolves it will increase the volume.

Experiment: fill up a 2 cup measure with water, add salt stir, add more stir, and in the end you'll see that if it all dissolves you will still have exactly one cup, but it will weight more because there is more in there: thus it is more dense.

Is sugar healthier than high fructose corn syrup?

It depends what you mean when you say "sugar". Most lay people would mean common white table sugar, or sucrose. If this is the case you are referring to a compound that is a 1:1 ratio of a glucose, fructose combination. High Fructose Corn Syrup comes in two common varieties, either 55% fructose 45% glucose or 42% fructose and 58% glucose. Either way, you are looking at percentages that are very similar to table sugar and treated by the body in almost the same pathways for processing. Glucose is not the issue, however elevated levels of fructose have recently been linked to higher levels of obesity and diabetes, as the body metabolizes it more like fat. This issue is created from both sources. The natural fructose in fruit is counterbalanced by fiber but this is generally not present in foods with high fructose corn syrup. For this reason the blood sugar level goes much higher, especially if drinking high fructose corn syrup. This can lead to obesity, diabetes and poor digestion.

In summary, they are both equally poison to the system in large quantities such as is normal to the American diet and will over prolonged periods of time lead to deleterious health effects.

"Editorial Note: High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) plays a leading role in the epidemic of obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer and type-2 diabetes sweeping across the post industrial world. Read how eating fructose sweetened foods rapidly produces a chain reaction of events in the body to result in out-of-control lipids, blood sugar and metabolic diseases like diabetes, atherosclerosis and similar conditions. Together with eating foods that are high in long-chain omega-6 vegetable oils, trans fats from processed foods, and saturated fats from farm-raised grain fed red meats and dairy, eating HFCS high fructose corn syrups is one of the major factors killing most people who die from obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, or a host of other diseases that have been proven to be associated with inflammation and insulin resistance. This excellent study from scientists working in Canada details the high fructose problem facing anyone eating today's common high sugar, low fiber, low antioxidant, high fat diet."

What might happen if a 73-year-old endomorph diabetic male injected 6 ml of high fructose corn syrup into his blood stream?

This sounds (literally) like a life or death question. You may want to contact a medical professional about this.

Answer

Hmm... that's touchy. Honestly, depending on just how bad this man's health is unless he is within finger's reach of sufficient insulin, plenty of food, and most importantly a hospital he'd die pretty quick. Probably a heartstorm or spontaneous kidney failure (even if he undergoes regular dialysis) not to mention his eye sight might disappear within so many minutes just before unconciousness.

If you're thinking about trying this as a prank DON'T DO IT!! Regardless of the legal definition, morally if you do this knowing his vulnerabilities it's kind of like comitting first degree murder especially if he's a type 1 (insulin dependant) diabetic.

Is this some kind of sick joke question? I'm a type 1 diabetic and this sounds like attempted murder or a suicide attempt? defintely NOT ok!

Why does bread contain high fructose corn syrup?

HFCS is used in bread and other baked goods to help with browning and to make the product softer. Pick up virtually any loaf of bread at the supermarket and it will contain either sugar or HFCS.

Answer HFCS is in bread and just about everything else because it is cheaper than sugar plus it bulks up the product so the consumer thinks he is getting more for his money. HFCS is banned in Europe.
