Can horses consume golden corn syrup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Regular corn syrup and Golden corn syrup are both sweeteners and it is not recommended to give them to horses as it can cause a 'sugar overload' and possibly trigger a bout of laminitis, or colic. If you need to sweeten a horses feed you could use a tiny teaspoon full of either of the corn syrups, but molasses is more commonly used. Honey is a good alternative, again at about a teaspoon full or less.

Glucose fructose syrup: the crack of sweeteners...

Have you heard of HFCS? Did you know that it's an ingredient in a wide variety of food products including biscuits, drinks, ice cream, yogurts, cakes and soups?

HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), is known as glucose fructose syrup in the UK and is made from maize starch.

It is now being widely used instead of beet and cane sugar (sucrose) as it's cheaper to produce and easier to blend into foodstuffs. It contains around the same number of calories as sugar, but it is thought that the body does not metabolise the syrup in the same way as sugar and that this can lead to weight gain.

For more information read this article from The Times: Beware the Devil's candy

Here are some products that contain glucose fructose syrup:

  • Kellogg's Cornflakes

  • Kellogg's All Bran

  • Kellogg's Rice Crispies

  • Ribena

  • Ocean Spray cranberry juice

  • Mullerice apple & Mullerice caramel

  • Yoplait Petits Filous

  • Fromage Frais

  • Coca-Cola

Beccy from Hertfordshire says: I was reading an article recently about glucose fructose syrup. It is causing major concerns in the US where it is widely used. It is chemically altered fructose that is 10 times sweeter than sugar. It is becoming more commonly used here because it is cheap and manufacturers don't have to use as much. Obviously it's chock full of empty calories, but there are also concerns about how it affects your metabolism with some research suggesting that it is more likely to cause obesity.

I found it as a main ingredient in Jaffa Cakes - which is worrying when they bill themselves as "healthy" due to low fat content - another example of low fat foods relying on chemicals and sugars (the worst of both worlds in this case!) to make them more palatable.

Can cane syrup substitue for corn syrup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. Cane syrup comes from the sugar cane plant, corn syrup comes from the corn plant. All sugars are sugar, but some affect the body differently depending on how quickly they break down in the body, how they are absorbed/utilized by the body, etc. For example, "high fructose corn syrup" has been shown to cause over 50% more belly fat than other sugars, which is why people are supposed to avoid it. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Agave syrup (from a cactus plant) is one of the lowest foods on the glycemic index (which measures how quickly a sugar breaks down in the body and how much that sugar affect (raises) insulin levels). Sugar is all sugar, but different kinds of sugar can act very differently in the body. Hope that answers your question. :)

Can you make fake blood without corn syrup and food coloring?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You will need something red to substitute for the food coloring, you can choose tomato soup or ketchup so you would still be able to put it in or on your mouth. Then follow these instructions for the type of blood you want using one of these instead of the food coloring:

Making Fake Blood

You can make it some of these ways depending on the type of blood you need, use amounts/proportions according to eye:

Fresh or spurting blood from arteries or flowing from capillaries (like when you cut your finger) is bright red because it has its hemoglobin carrying lots of oxygen in it and that makes it more red. Make it by mixing red food coloring in white (clear) corn syrup.

Old pooled blood gets thicker and darker. Make it by mixing the red food coloring in the corn syrup and then add chocolate syrup.

Older blood that is spattered or not pooled is a little thinner than pooled and thickened blood, so make that mixture as above with the chocolate syrup and then add a little water to thin it.

Fresh flowing blood from veins has less oxygen than arterial blood and it is also carrying some wastes from the body's cells that makes it darker. But, it is not blue like is often incorrectly indicated even sometimes in school. It is darker red but it is a "cooler" shade of red and that can be made using some blue in the mix. Make it like the pooled blood with food coloring, corn syrup, chocolate syrup and then a small amount of liquid detergent (like dish washing liquid) that is a blue color just to get a darker dirty red.

But, when you add the detergent, you can't use it for blood to come out of your mouth, so instead of the detergent when you want to have the blood come from your mouth or be on your face, use honey. So what you'll have in your mouth is corn syrup, honey, food coloring and chocolate syrup.

Is corn syrup good or bad for you?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. Aside from being nothing but empty sugars, high fructose corn syrup has been linked to gastrointestinal problems as well. It's not as though corn syrup will harm you much more than any other empty sugar, but a person consuming large amounts of corn syrup is replacing calories that could have been from nutritious fruits and vegetables with a nothing less substitute.

Answer: HFCS is banned in UK and about to be in Europe.

Is corn syrup kosher for passover?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In general chewy or gummy candy may have gelatin, which (unless specified as kosher) is made from ground up pig bone, sometimes cow, making it nonkosher.

Many brands of candy corn contain gelatin. I would say more than half of them do so you should definitely look for a brand that has kosher certification. There are kosher brands of candy corn on the market. f

What is the chemical formula for high fructose corn syrup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

High Fructose Corn Syrup, or HFCS is a synthetic monosaccharide. It is 55% fructose and 45% glucose. The obvious carbohydrate is the fructose. The molecular structure of fructose is as follows:

C6H12O6 is the chemical composition of glucose

Here is a link that will show a diagram of fructose:
