How many miles should a high school cross country runner be running in a week?

At the least run 3 miles each day Saturday is an easy day and take Sunday off. With this you should be running about 16-17 miles a week.

(Sanandraous)

^wrong. im a decently fast HS runner (17 minute 5K as sophmore). You will want to be putting 30-40 miles a week. take 1 day off. Have 2-3 days of workouts. easy days before/after races and long runs on the other days. If you are in HS your coach should know something about what you need to be doing. 16 miles a week will not make you faster.

If you can sprint at the end of a race does it mean you haven't worked hard enough?

It depends on the race, but in general you should have a little energy left for the kick at the end. If you still have energy after the race then you probably didn't run to the best of your abilities, but sprinting at the end is normally a good thing.

How do you stop gagging at the end of a cross country race?

Gagging at the end of a race can mean several things:

1) You may have eaten too close to the race. I always avoid eating anything 2 hours before a cross country race. Avoid milk, banana's, apples and oranges, and cheese before a race.

2) You may have gone very anaerobic and/or built up so much lactic acid that you are gagging merely because of how hard you've run. You can overcome this by training harder and getting used to being anaerobic.

3) You may have an overly developed gag reflex. This one would require a doctor to diagnose you, and then to suggest treatment (if there is one).

Should you run a 10k the day after a 5k?

No, the amount of strain you put on your body in a fast race (eg.5k) is tremendous! Doing easy running for the next day or two or even just resting or cross-training is recommended for recovery. You put yourself at an increased chance of injury by racing back-to-back.

Where is the best place to buy Cross country spikes?

There are several options.

I live in Oregon, and the best place here, is Portland Running Co. Their shop specializes in athletic shoes, and the staff watch you run in the shoes.

I suggest checking out local running stores, where you're more likely to find service similar to Portland Running Co.

Other options such as Nike or Joes are also great places with helpful staff.
