In the story of David and Goliath who is David?

Asked by Wiki User

David was a child (probably teenager) who kills Goliath with a stone from his slingshot. He later becomes the second king of Israel.

David was about 14 years of age when he slew Goliath, the same year he was anointed King of Israel by Samuel, a judge and prophet in Israel. David was the Son of Jesse, and a shepherd boy who tended the flocks.

Whose armor did David attempt to wear when he was going to fight Goliath?

Millions of young children have been taught the famous story of David slaying the Philistine giant, Goliath, to guide them to understand the greatness of David and, perhaps, his God.

David had already had intimate acquaintance with Saul, when he became the king's armour bearer and then his personal musician. A little later, David told Saul that he would fight Goliath, so Saul offered him his own personal armour, but did not appear to recognise David. Finally, after David had slain Goliath, Saul had the young warrior brought to him, but once again did not recognise David. The likely explanation for this is that the account blends together several different legends, without attempting to harmonise them. Perhaps this is why the Book of Chronicles omits David's defeat of Goliath, even though the Deuteronomic History saw this as the most important reason David was accepted as king.

If there is underlying truth in the story as it comes down to us, then David attempted to wear Saul's armour. Chronicles' rejection of this story would mean that David did not attempt to wear any armour, because he did not fight Goliath.

Whom did David give Goliath's head to?

Goliath's head was buried there (Calvary) and this is where the name Golgotha is derived from. Goliath was a person sent by Satan himself to destroy the Hebrew (Israel) nation at that time when God chose David the Shepherd boy to slay him.

This is why when Jesus was crucified on top of the hill (Golgotha, which was predestined by God the Father, Jesus's precious blood that spilled on this hill fulfilled and sealed the promise God gave us. "Through His stripe's we are healed." And this is why we Christians proclaim that Satan was defeated at the Cross because this is exactly what Jesus did. Jesus descended into hell to hand Satan his imminent death certificate. All praises to our King, Lord Jesus.

The reference to this analogy was proven by the contemporary Pastor, Perry Stone.

How did David see God in the Goliath vs David Bible story?

David had complete and unwavering trust in God's ability and power to win the battle for him. He had unshakeable faith in the existence of God and was not disappointed.

1 Samuel 17

37David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

38And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

39And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

40And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

41And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

42And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.

At that David runs toward Goliath, takes a stone from his bag, puts it in his sling, and hurls it straight into Goliath's forehead. When the Philistines see that the giant is dead, they are terrified and they run away. The Israelites chase after them and win the battle. Please read together with your family this whole story at 1 Samuel 17:12-54. As a youth, you may at times become afraid to follow God's commands. Jeremiah was a young person and he was afraid at first, but God told him: "Do not be afraid . . . for 'I am with you.'" Jeremiah took courage and preached as God instructed him to do. A:The story of David and Goliath is in 1 Samuel, which is regarded by biblical scholars as having been written during the seventh century BCE by an anonymous source now known as the Deuteronomist, in Jerusalem. However, scholars do not believe that the Deuteronomist created the story, but that he relied on older written or oral traditions about David and Goliath.

The phrase is used to describe a victory where the weaker or smaller party wins over the larger or more powerful opponent particularly when the victory is unexplainable in any other way than with divine guidance. David killed Goliath with only a sling and stone yet God guided the stone which triumphed over Goliath's armour, brawn and bravado.

Why did David and Goliath fight?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Quite frankly I don't think they ever fought. There were a lot of verbal challenges and name-calling. When David finally entered the scene, he picked up 5 stones from the valley; David made a little speech, and headed straight over toward Goliath; and slung the first stone right into Goliath's forehead. The dude dropped like a flat cake. The fight ended before it got started. David cut off his head with Goliath's own sword. And the other guys all scattered like quail every-which-way. Now that's the way it's done.

ANSWER:

The complete answer is found in 1 Samuel 17. Here one can read that the Philistines were encroaching upon Judean lands (verse 3). These Philistines put forth a 'champion' (a Hebrew expression for 'a go-between' or warrior who will fight a single combat as a stand-in for the entire armies). Now begins the great story of faith of David who had just defeated a lion and bear a short time before this and this probably gave him faith to trust God for victory over Goliath (Philistine champion).

We read in verse 45-47, that David would go before Goliath in the NAME OF THE LORD OF HOST, the God of the armies of Israel. Host here refers to God as Commander over the armies of heaven and Israel via the covenatal relationship with the Israelites. David was depending upon the power of God as the Warrior and Defender of His people as Exodus 15:3 states.

Now David as Israel's champion appeared as a shepherd boy chasing a dog or wolf away from his flock vis-a-vis Goliath who stood nearly 10 foot tall in full battle gear. Yet, in verse 48 we read how David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. He took out a stone and slung it, striking Goliath in the forehead, killing him. Then David, not having a sword, took Goliath's sword and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw this improbable if not impossible outcome for their champion by the champion of Israel, they fled.

Complete reading comprehension requires a full reading of the events described in chapter 17. The word fight has shades of meanings but the one in your question suggest:

  • A confrontation between opposing groups in which each attempts to harm or gain power over the other, as with bodily force or weapons.
  • A quarrel or conflict.

Being such, the above answer does fully satisfy this question. However, it is strongly suggested that you read and study Scripture directly and not depend on anyone for answers. You and you alone are responsible for your Salvation. Have a good read :)

Why did king david kill giant Goliath?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's worth noting that David wasn't king when he killed Goliath. This is detailed in full in 1 Samuel chapter 17, but basically, the Israelites were constantly at war with the Philistines, and at one point, they camped their armies across from each other. The 9-foot champion of the Philistines was Goliath, and he challenged Israel to send out one man to fight him. All of the soldiers were too cowardly to accept this challenge. David was still living at home in Bethlehem at the time, but his three oldest brothers were fighting in the war. So David was sent back and forth between tending to the flocks of sheep at home and going to Saul's army. One day while he was bringing his brothers supplies from home, he arrived as Goliath was shouting his daily challenge that no one had yet accepted. He was outraged that none of the soldiers would fight Goliath, so he volunteered. And the rest, as they say, is history. He went out with five smooth stones and a sling because he was not comfortable in Saul's armor.

Your answer, to show it to Saul, would be incorrect. At that time Saul was with the army where the battle took place, at the Valley of Elah. He would have seen David slaying Goliath. [1 Samuel 17]

Jerusalem at the time was still a Jebusite city, not a city of Israel. Jerusalem was not taken until after Saul had died and after David had been made King of Israel [in 2 Samuel 2]. [Jerusalem was not captured until 2 Samuel 5.]

How old was david when he faced goliath?

According to Numbers 1:2-4 (AMP):

2 Take a census of all the males of the congregation of the Israelites by families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, head by head

3 From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go forth to war you and Aaron shall number, company by company.

4 And with you there shall be a man (to assist you) from each tribe, each being the head of his father's house.

You had to be 20 years old to fight in the army. David was the youngest of 8.

He went and visited his 3 older brothers...

1 Samuel 17:12-16 - 12Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years. 13The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul, 15but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 16For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.

That means three of the sons were over 20 and five of the sons were under 20, including David. Perhaps the fourth son was 19, the fifth son was 18, the sixth son was 17, the seventh son was 16, David has to be at the most, 15, and most likely younger than 15 as having a baby every year was probably unlikely.

Where does it say in the bible that david used a slingshot and stone to kill goliath?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Book of Samuel, Chapter 17 of the Old Testament gives the account of Goliath and David (who slew Goliath). Whether David actually killed Goliath when he hit him in the forehead with the stone is not entirely clear although verse 50 says "So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David." That implies that the stone killed him but it's not certain. At any rate after Goliath collapsed, David took Goliath's sword out of it's sheath and cut off Goliath's head. At that point he was definitely dead. In theory someone wielding a sling can get a stone up to sufficient velocity to cause fatal damage when it strikes someone in the head. A sling can be used to fire a projectile at speeds approaching 140 mph. At such high speeds, if the blow didn't kill Goliath, it certainly would have knocked him cold. There is no mention of him putting up any resistance to the much smaller shepherd boy coming up to his prostrate form, taking the sword out of its scabbard, and STANDING ON HIM to cut off his head, so he had to either be dead or at least totally dead to the world (unconscious).

What is the meaning of the five stone in David and Goliath?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

What were the stones like? It is unlikely they were mere pebbles the size of grapes or olives. Slingstones have been found that are from 2 to 3 inches [5 to 8 cm] in diameter, the size of a small orange. A slinger could fling such a stone at speeds of from 100 to 150 miles per hour [160 to 240 km/hr].
