Even before they could be read and translated, people began imagining that the Dead Sea Scrolls would contain truths that would prove the story of Jesus, or that they would somehow prove the reliability of the Old Testament. Some even hoped that they would contain copies of the New Testament gospels, an expectation that would have moved the date of the gospel authorship back to before 70 CE. These expectations added to the fame of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Eventually, scholars began to find real value in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Many of the scrolls were ancient copies of the Hebrew scriptures, allowing scholars to compare modern versions of the Bible and see what changes have occurred over the last two thousand years. They also allowed scholars to compare an early Hebrew version of the scriptures, to see how accurate the Septuagint translation would have been. They have provided a window into the culture of Palestinian Jews of the first century.

On average, sea water is 3% denser (more mass per unit volume, thus more weight per volume) than fresh water, so less of it must be displaced to provide a buoyant force sufficient to balance the weight of the object. This is why floating is easier in salt water than in fresh.

you could swim in well more like float because the the Dead Sea is extremely concentrated with dissolved mineral salts, the water density is much greater then any other salt water including the ocean

About 25million years ago, due to a combination of high sea levels in the Mediterranean Sea and seismic activity in the region, a link formed between the Mediterranean Ocean and the northern tip of the Afro-Asian Rift valley. The link was formed close to the modern city of Haifa and resulted in the inundation of what is now known as the Jordan River basin. Subsequent seismic activity resulted in the closure of the link which left behind a large lake over 200km long from north to south and around 30km wide which geologists call Lake Lisan. The level of Lake Lisan has fluctuate greatly over its lifetime but has fallen steadily in the last 25,000 years or so and the salinity has changed significantly during that time. The remaining remnants of Lake Lisan are the Sea of Galillee and the Dead Sea.

To date they are probably the single most significant archeological discovery relating to the Bible. They confirm empirically, for all to see, what had previously been believed, namely, that the scribes who copied the Old Testament scriptures did so with the utmost accuracy. The few differences between the text of the Old Testament from Qmran, obviously much closer to the originals, and the surviving texts from much later confirms how greatly accurate was the hand copying process.

Further to this, a number of other important discoveries were among the Qmran manusctipts, including a fragment of the Gospel of Mark, old enough to be an original, dated before AD 70. The other significant find was an entire Isaiah scroll, thus refuting the documentary ideas of an Isaiah written by multiple authors at different times.

They are parchment scrolls found in 1947 in the Judean Desert, which date back some 2100 years. They were apparently written by a non-traditional group such as the Essenes, but nonetheless they demonstrate (in some cases) that the Masoretic Text is as accurate as tradition says it is.

The Dead Sea is a body of water in Israel that has a high salt content thus containing a low level of life. It is part of the biblical holy land. But, most of all it is famous for being the area that the Dead Sea Scrolls are from. Specifically a cave in Qumran is the site where several ancient manuscripts were found. They were written just after the time of Christ. These scrolls provide historic and philosophical information about Jesus and his followers.

People are swimming in the arctic, so why not in the Mediterranean.

There are of course dangers.

In the arctic, the cold would be.... lethal.... if exposed for too long.

In the Mediterranean sea, there are some sharks and other nice living things searching for food.

All things taken into consideration and I would still prefer the warmer water in the Mediterranean sea.

There is nothing wrong in swimming there, but one should always pay attention to dangers wherever you are.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of 972 texts from the Hebrew Bible and extra-biblical documents found between 1947 and 1956 on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, from which they derive their name. They were specifically located at Khirbet Qumran in the British Mandate for Palestine, in what is now known as the West Bank.

In the past, the Dead Sea was presumed to be a sea because it was large and it contained saltwater. However, modern cartographers have shown it to be a lake, and not a sea.

By the way, lakes CAN be saltwater.

The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth at over 1200 ft below sea level. Is is also the saltiest and cannot support aquatic life. Its shores are the lowest point on the surface of the Earth on dry land. The Dead Sea is 378 m (1,240 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. It is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, with 33.7 percent salinity which makes it 8.6 times as salty as the ocean. it is the saltiest sea in the world so if you go the and get in the water you can actually float because of how salty the water is.

I'm not exactly sure why it is so important, but I know why it is so interesting. The Dead Sea contains such a high amount of salt that no aquatic creature could survive in it. Also, a human can only float, they can not go underwater, because the amount of salt keeps them up. The sand is covered with clusters of salt, and it really is a beautiful place. Sorry this doesn't answer your questin, but I or interests you.

I found something that kind of helps out too. They get a lot of money from getting the sea salt from out of it and and selling it. lol its pretty obvious if you think about it.

The Dead Sea does have another name: The Salt Sea. This is because 35% of the Sea is dissolved Salt.

They are both below sea level. They both normally have extremely higher air pressure which means the air molecules are extremely dense and the air is really heavy. They both have higher temperatures then the surrounding land due to the sun hitting so many air molecules. They are both in a hot and dry climate. They also both have a high concentrated solution water source since they are like a bowl where everything sinks to it and that there is no other elevation lower than it. Death valley is usually a dried land but the only water source it has may be in badwater basin. The shores of the dead sea is much lower than the shores in the ocean. The water in the dead sea is so concentrated with solutes that it is much denser than a human body so that is why people can float on it. Water can usually never go out of the dead sea, the only way to get out is to be evaporated. If death valley and the dead sea were not so hot and dry they may be a bigger and deeper lake or lagoon.
