Are Demerol and morphine the same?

Mepergan Forte contains the opioid pain reliever Meperidine, also known as Demerol and the antinausea medication Promethazine also known as Phenergan. Promethazine is from the phenothiazine class of medications. It is often administered in combination with an opioid, like Meperidine, to minimize the nausea that is caused by pain medication. The product Mepergan Forte is taken in oral form and contains both Meperidine for pain, and Promethazine for nausea.

What is difference between Demerol and Vicodin?

The biggest difference is their potency - Demerol is a DEA Schedule 2 controlled substance, while Vicodin (Hydrocodone) is a Schedule 3 drug. Demerol (generic name Meperidine), being a Schedule 2 drug, is more tighty regulated - you cannot get refills, and each fill must be obtained with a new prescription each time. Also, many doctors don't like to prescribe Demerol because it's been associated with potential seizures. Personally I think it's that they're too chicken - I've used it for years with no problem.

Vicodin, being a Schedule 3 drug, can have refills on one prescription and isn't as tightly regulated, and is more often prescribed for most acute pain patients.

Pharmacologically, they're both morphine derivatives, though Demerol is a lot stronger. It's also more often given as an injectable or through an IV stream when a person is in the hospital.

What is the weakest to strongest painkillers?

no one knows what is in fentanyl, but the people who own the patent. The fact is that drugs are as big as the military complex the USA has become,

The Duragesic patches work and if the makers of fentanyl (the spelling is correct) works like an opiate, it matters not to the one in pain what is in it.

I use it and it does reduce the pain a bit; however, if I found out it contained a bit of cow dung in it, I would still use it Now human excrement would make me take a new look at morphine

How is Demerol tested in the body?

demerol is a opiate. so it can be tested the same as most common prescription medications. urinalysis, blood, and hair folical are some of the ways it can be tested.

How strong is 50mg of Demerol?

Is 50mg of demerol stronger than 40mg of hydrocodone? The answer to that question is Yes. First of all hydrocodone is a schedule III drug where as demerol is a schedule II narcotic. The DEA classifies narcotics, amphetamines, sedatives, hypnotics by schedules. The lower they are on the schedule list the stronger and more powerful they are. Hydrocodone comes in 2.5mg to 10mg tabs and also comes in cough syrup. Usually hydrocodone is used as a combination drug with Tylenol. Hydrocodone can generally only be taken by mouth. Generally narcotics when taken by mouth loose 25-50% of their efficacy because they have to be broken down in the GI tract before entering the blood stream. Demerol on the other hand comes in 50mg tabs for oral use, it comes in liquid form, for injections and IV administration, where it bypasses the GI tract and goes directly into the blood stream for immediate pain relief with no loss of efficacy. Demerol can also be used in an IV drip form like morphine. Hydrocodone is designed for mild to moderate pain where as demerol is designed for moderate to severe pain. A general rule of thumb is you need 10X more medication (same medication) by mouth to get the same pain relief as you do if the medication is given IV. and a shot form maybe 5X. I hope that answers your question.

Is it okay to mix Demerol with Oxycontin?

That depends on whether you're taking a time released form like Oxycontin or an immediate release like Percocet or Roxycontin. You ideally wouldn't want them peaking at the same time. So you should be on Oxycontin and a fairly low dose of XANAX.

What is stronger Meperidine or hydrocodone?

Meperidine is generic for Demerol which in fact is very similar to Morphine so what do you think?.................Well if you said Meperidine you are correct. Yes they are all opiates. But Morphine is the father try smoking opium.

How long to wait to drive after 2 Demerol pills?

No you cannot drive after taking demerol, it impairs your ability to focus and causes severe drowsiness.

Does Demerol expire?

No - the expiration dates on most prescriptions are for full potency, though some, like those containing aspirin, shouldn't be used past a certain point after the expiration since they break down and aren't safe.

In general though, if you keep Demerol (Meperidine) and similar drugs in their original containers, and maintain them in storage in a cool, dry environment, their potency will last for many years. For example, military drugs such as morphine from WWII stores are still found occasionally in medical supplies that are still as potent as the day they were packed. Remember it's how the drug is stored that leads to its deterioration - the date is a reference only.

What is the history of demerol?

Demerol is a narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid used as an analgesic and and maintenance anti-addictive.

Allergic to Demerol can you take Fentanyl?

If patient is truly allergic to either Demerol or Fentanyl (i.e. anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock), then give morphine. Both drugs mentioned above are synthetics, which are completely different family from morphine, which is an alkaloid. Hope this helps.

Poison Control, or a local emergency number

The National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) can be called from anywhere in the United States. This national hotline number will let you talk to experts in poisoning. They will give you further instructions.

This is a free and confidential service. All local poison control centers in the United States use this national number. You should call if you have any questions about poisoning or poison prevention. It does NOT need to be an emergency. You can call for any reason, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

See: Poison control center - emergency number

What to expect at the emergency room

The health care provider will measure and monitor the patient's vital signs, including temperature, pulse, breathing rate, and blood pressure. Symptoms will be treated as appropriate.

The patient may receive:

  • Activated charcoal
  • Antidote (medicine to reverse the effects of the antihistamine)
  • Breathing support (oxygen and possibly a breathing tube)
  • Fluids through a vein (by IV)
  • Laxative
  • Tube from the mouth into the stomach to empty the stomach (gastric lavage)
Expectations (prognosis)

Recovery is likely if the patient survives the first 24 hours. Few patients actually die from an antihistamine overdose.
