When you are emotionally distressed you should talk to someone you trust and get some perspective on your problems?

This technique, whether using a friend/family member or a mental health professional, can be very beneficial. Strong emotions, particularly distress, often cause perception distortion. You can easily get lost in the strong emotions and lose a larger perspective. The feelings begin to change how you see things, and it's easy to trust them because they originate inside of you. We have to learn how to distrust and evaluate our own emotions. Someone who is not inside your head can provide that reorientation and perspective needed to see how the emotions are influencing your perceptions.

Often, it's difficult to hear an outside perspective. It can feel like an attack on you or how you feel. Sometimes tough love is required. This can be easier coming from a neutral mental health professional versus someone you have a relationship with. It just depends on the relationships you have available.

Can people with bipolar disorder work?

About Bipolar Illness?

Bipolar disorder or bipolar illness is a mood disorder. Individuals who suffer from this disorder have mood changes from severe excitement or mania to extremely low periods of depression. The mood swings can last for short time periods or for several months at a time. This disorder is sometimes difficult for professionals to diagnose because of the symptoms. Doctors sometimes misdiagnose people with major depressive disorder during a bipolar depressive episode. On the other hand, they sometimes diagnose people with anxiety during a manic episode. In order for an individual to receive a proper diagnosis for bipolar disorder, he or she must fit certain criteria.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

There are three types of bipolar disorder: type I, type II, and cyclothymia. Individuals with type I bipolar disorder must experience at least one manic episode followed by a period of depression. People with type II bipolar disorder must experience episodes of hypomania followed by depression. Hypomania is not as severe as mania. The individual may only exhibit impulsive behaviors and high levels of energy. Cyclothymia is a lower level bipolar disorder. The individual will most likely experience only mild depression and hypomania.

Mania vs. Depression Symptoms

A manic episode is a very agitated state of existence. During the manic phase of bipolar, the individual will have an extremely elevated mood. He or she may engage in risky behaviors such as gambling or having sex with many partners. He or she may also talk frequently, have trouble sleeping, and experience racy thoughts. The individual may also be easily angered and have negative emotional outbursts.

Depression is quite the opposite of mania. A bipolar individuals in a depressed state will usually feel worthless and helpless. He or she may have trouble making it to work due to the sadness and lack of energy. The individual may not enjoy normal daily activities. He or she may even choose to sleep all day or ignore hygiene.

In order for a doctor to diagnose a person with bipolar disorder, that person must experience both manic and depressive episodes. The doctor is more likely to give a proper diagnosis if the patient visits several times. He or she must also disclose all symptoms to the physician.

What do you do when several medications taken don't help with depression and anxiety?

*. OPINION ONE 1. Keep on taking the medicines you are already taking or the illness may worsen into hopelessness and helplessness that could lead to suicide. If you attempt withdrawl (with or without Doctor's supervision) and you notice the intensity of anxiety, depression increasing on withdrawl of a medicine it is important to realise that the medicine is helping you though it does not suffice. Restart the medicine. 2. Add another antidepressant to the existing medicines. Wait for about 6weeks to see its effect. 3. If you still notice the depression worsening go on adding antidepressant one followed by the other. (A patient was taking about 9 different antidepressants. He took anxiolytics in addition. Rare, but true.) 4. Thyroid hormone- Eltroxin, stimulaters - Methyl phenidate and Modafinil may be added. 5. In resistant cases good old electroconvulsive therapy may be added. 6. Replace SSRIs and TCAs with MAO inhibitor like Parnate. Consider Mocloblemide. 7. Include mood stabilizers (bipolar). 8. ALL THESE ARE CONSIDERATIONS FOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER THAT APPEARS TO BE RESISTANT. SUPERVISION OF QUALIFIED PSYCHIATRIST AND GOOD CARE GIVER (RELATIVE) IS MANDATORY. Do blood serum levels especially if you are taking Lithium. 9. Adjuvants like Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Biblotherapy should not be neglected. OPINION TWO *.Get off all medication, drugs and alcohol (with the assistance of your doctor), and start from scratch. Remember that most psych medications take several weeks to have their effects. Bouncing from one to another is likely to create problems. Drinking or drugging will screw everything up.
