Deserts

All of the UK has more than 10" of rain in a year, therefore there are no deserts in UK.

I'm not so sure why the teacher asked that question then. I need to discuss.

If the land receives less than 10 inches of precipitation per year on average, it is considered a desert. If it receives between 10 and 20 inches, it would be a semi-arid region such as a steppe or a grassland.

Actually, the desert has cities rather than cities having deserts. Here are a few:

Desert encroachment is simply the gradual movement of a desert towards an area causing such an area to become a desert. Such areas are likely to become deserts due to their physical conditions at that point in time.

Between Baltimore City and Washington D.C Marylands more Metro parts are in the center, while the Appalachain Mountain Range dominates the Western Sections. On the Eastern Shore you have flat farm land and lots of forests (as stated ablove) and Beaches circulate the Chesapeake Bay Region. Many beaches are scattered on the Island Of Ocean City, and Assateague. The Bay seperates Maryland's Western and Eastern Shores.

There technically isn't a Sierra desert. A section of the Mojave is called "Sierra desert" because it extends to Sierra in Nevada. It spans over California and Nevada. High Sierra Desert is in California, while the rest of it goes into Nevada.

There are a number of deserts in the Americas, including the Chihuahuan Desert, the Sonoran Desert, the Mojave Desert, the Painted Desert, the Great Basin Desert of North America and the Atacama and Patagonian Deserts of South America. Sources differ as, according to the Australian Government's GeoScience website, Australia's land cover does change constantly due to weather and land use. Over a period of even one decade, figures will change.

An estimated 44% percent, or over one-third of Australia is made up of sandy or stony arid and semi-arid desert, while another 37% is sparse grassland or scrub. The figures for arid and semi-arid are very different from those given in the source quoted below.

The Physical Characteristics of something is like what it looks like e.g. White Chocolate; white, creamy. For the Simpson Desert it would be sandy so an explanation of the plants, animals, sand dunes the colour of the dirt/sand. Hope its helpful!

The length of the day is governed by the latitude and season of the year. The Mojave will have the same amount of daylight as other areas of the world at the same latitude and season. Being a desert does not increase/decrease the number of hours of daylight.

First of all, it's important to know the difference between dessert and desert. Dessert means food items served at the end of a meal. Desert means dry area where natural vegetation is scarce and life is a difficult one. Siberia is a cold desert.

The Antarctic Desert has experienced temperatures below -120 degrees F and the Gobi Desert may plunge to -40 degrees. Parts of the Great Basin Desert and the Colorado Plateau Desert may experience temperatures below -20 degrees in some places in winter.

The Sahara Desert covers most of Northern Africa.

While some deserts are on western margins of continents, most desert land isn't. The main Asian deserts happen to be in the middle of the continent, the Sahara spreads right across North Africa from west to east, and Australia's deserts are also largely central. And then there's the entire continent of Antarctica, a desert due to its low level of precipitation.
