In the NHL one of the oldest and probably the most bitter rivalry is the Leafs and Canadiens. It brings a history of English Canada vs French Canada, which is one of the reasons why it is intense, although the English vs French thing probably isn't as relevant today. But every time the Leafs and Canadiens meet, there is always a great energy between the teams and the fans.

So as for the biggest, I would go with Leafs-Canadiens. But there are many more rivalries in the NHL that are pretty big and intense as well, ie. Canadiens-Bruins especially and one that many could argue for being the biggest; Oilers-Flames, Red Wings-Avalanche etc. Also the battles of Provinces and States, Leafs-Senators, Oilers-Flames as mentioned already, Flyers-Penguins, Rangers-Islanders etc, some of these not as big as others.

For international men's hockey, its Canada-Russia. Look up the Summit Series. Its always something special to watch the best of these two countries go at it. At the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, there was huge hype for the two to make it the finals and face off against each other. The finals ended up being Canada and the US though, which could show that maybe another big rivalry has emerged, as the two countries have met twice in this last decade (2002, and 2010) in the Olympic Gold Medal game. To add a little more fuel to this rivalry, the US beat Canada at the World Juniors on home soil, ending Canada's dominance at the World Juniors and attempt for 6 straight World Jr Championships.

For international women's hockey, it's Canada-USA. Since Women's Ice Hockey was introduced at the Olympics, the two have met in the finals every singe time. The US won the first Gold Medal, with Canada winning the next 3. For the 2010 Olympics, I believe the US had won every tournament, and if I'm not mistaken, every game against Canada leading up to the Olympics. The gold medal game in 2002 was pretty intense as well. The American had the Canadian flag on the dressing room floor, and the officiating was fairly one sided for the Americans, however Canada still managed to pull off the win in an amazing game.

In 2002 and 2010, the finals were the same for both men and women at the Olympics, Canada vs USA, showing that this rivalry is definitely alive and strong. Some argue that for the men, the rivalry today could be just as big as the rivalry with Russia.

In 1925, the WHL folded and an owner from Detroit bought the Victoria Cougars and moved them to Detroit where he was granted a franchise to play in the NHL. In 1930 the team was renamed the Falcons. In 1932, the team was bought by James Norris and renamed the Red Wings, which they have been named ever since.

As of 2012, the Detroit Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cup championships. This is more than any other NHL franchise based in the United States. Their most recent championship win was the 2007-2008 Stanley Cup.

Because if it were to be on the left side the wing on the front crest would either cover it or put the C in a awkward position on the jersey. They changed it when the jersey changed from CCM to Reebok.

The Red Wings finished the 2002-03 season with 48 wins, 20 losses, 10 ties, and 4 overtime losses. The team won the Central Division and was the second seed in the Western Conference, but was swept in four games in the Conference Quarterfinals by the seventh seeded Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

In 1933, the old Detroit Falcons were purchased by Mr. James Norris and renamed the Red Wings.

The Lions were originally the Portsmouth, Ohio Spartans, founded in 1929. The Spartans joined the NFL in 1930 and moved to Detroit in 1934, becoming the Lions.

The Red Wings won their third Stanley Cup in 1943, by sweeping the Boston Bruins.

I seem to remember New Zealand getting beat by over 50 goals at a very low championship level back in the early 90's. However, the highest score I can actually confirm at this time occurred on Feb.12, 1949, at the World Championships when Canada defeated Denmark 49-0.

Wayne Gretzky, during his time with the junior Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds, wanted to wear number 9 because Howe was his favourite player, but a teammate was already wearing it, so he chose 99 instead at the suggestion of his coach.

Detroit was granted an expansion franchise in 1926. In the same year, Frank and Lester Patrick, the owners of the Western Hockey League (yes, the owned the WHOLE LEAGUE) folded their operation and agreed to sell their players to the NHL. The new Detroit team purchased the players of the WHL Victoria Cougars and adopted their nickname in honor of the folded franchise. Their red and white striped jersey is still worn by the Wings on special occasions (e.g. Winter Classic). In 1930 the team was renamed the Detroit Falcons. In 1932, the team was bought by James Norris, who had played for the Montreal HC "Winged Wheelers" around the turn of the century. Norris adapted the logo of his old team into the now familiar red winged wheel and changed the team's name to the Detroit Red Wings.
