Why did Pokemon take the cake from Digimon?
Pokemon was technically first, and look at them both today. The Pokemon company makes an online game, digimon copies.
EDIT: The Pokemon show and games were released before the alternative Digimon stuff. However the Digimon concept was out before Pokemon. In 1995 Bandai released a toy called "Digimon virtual pet" which was a little hand-held electronic toy. So Digimon was already around almost a year before Pokemon.
Sorry to edit your answer, but Pokemon came first. The games were released in 1996 for Game Boy. Digimon came later on in 1997 as a spinoff of tamagotchi. They aren't ripoffs of each other, as they are very different.

to answer the question though, the reason for Pokemon's greater success is more people knew about it sooner, and when digimon came along possible fans may have seen it as an imitation

Pokemon = Pocket monsters
Digimon = Digital monsters
So technicly, if you think about it, digimon came out before Pokemon so to not confuse you, I'll give one point to digimon. BUT Pokemon came before digimon in the US so Pokemon gets one point. so they each have a point, the only way to figure out who actually 'took the cake", just see every single country that exists and if they both aired in that country, whichever one was first gets a point. If only one of the shows was aired there, that show gets a point. Whenever ppl are done calculating all the points, that show "took the cake" from the other show. It's actually a quite fair idea.

Pokemon, if anything, was potentially a ripoff of SMT (or dragon quest V) to start with, but no, digimon isn't a pokemon ripoff. Why? Initially digmon was a spin off of tamagotchis, except for boys instead of girls. Nothing to do with pokemon. And the original digimon pets were in production at the same time as the pokemon game. The initial digimon manga, c'mon digimon, was in production at the same time as the pokemon anime, so couldn't have ripped it off. The subsequent V-tamer manga and adventure anime were just follow-ons of this. Talking about the digimon anime, which is what most people cite as being a pokemon rip-off, that just plain doesn't make sense. The anime is about each character meeting a single digimon and powering them up to fight with them i a plot to save the world from evil and suchlike. Pokemon is an anime about one character and his pokemon which he was given, and his quest to catch them all. The digimon anime is closer to mar, but no-one accuses that of being a pokemon ripoff.
EDIT: Pokemon was released at February 27, 1996, and Digimon at June 26, 1997, and Digimon is not a ripoff of Tamagotchi, case it wad released by the same company witch makes Digimon another merchandise, and not a ripoff.

Go to Chip Forest and search around, then you should find a couple of Gummymons fight them for a while and then go to your tamer home and go to the p.c. on the right and press 'Digiconvert'.
Once you have your gummymon train it for a while(around level 15) then you digivlole it into a renemon.... IT IS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY EXTREMELY IRRATATING TO GET A SAKUYAMON, SO YOU BETTER BE GOODAT DNA DIGIVOLVING ANDALOT OF TRAINING!
