Why can't you put dish washing soap in the dishwasher?

Dish liquid is designed to generate a lot of suds. A dishwasher cycle will stir up excessive suds that the machine won't be able to rinse away. Some dishwashers will stop or break down if this happens. If you're out of the regular dish washing detergent, rinse the dishes well before you put them in and then run the dishwasher without detergent. The hot water and dry cycle will sanitize dishes sufficiently. Or, put the dishes in, close the door and leave it until you can get some detergent.

Is Noritake China dishwasher safe?

While it could be washed in a dishwasher, you would have to insure that it doesn't rub against anything. The rythmic motions of the water in a dishwasher can cause things to rock back and forth, rubbing against other dishes and the racks. These will wear away the thin gold coating. I would recommend hand washing.

What was used before dishwashers were invented?

(1) They used a stream and a rock or two from the bottom of the stream and soap....

(2) Following the stream-and-stone method, the washboard was developed. The washboard required the person to scrub the material up and down over the corrugated board, as the board stood in a washtub (about the size of a standard washing machine tub).

(3) Next came the washer with double-roller. This required a person to manually insert and crank wet, soapy material between the two rollers -- somewhat easier than pounding or scrubbing, but still not an easy task.
