How do you make dogs stay?

yes it is hard and this may take a while. if you watch Cesar millan it may help,it did for me. first you might wanna get the dog calm, taking it for a walk can help. when you are doing the trainning be calm, very calm and don't yell loud at the dog if it doesnt listen. take the leash and make the dog be by our side, pull on the leash up and say shhh stay and then walk away. when you say shh say it fast and stern. and don't pull on the leash hard, just enough so it will get it attention. so repeat the process again. say shh stay, drop the leash and walk away.don't make eye contact when you walk away. there is a different way that may be better for some dogs,so it goes like this. you bring the dog by your side, make it sit, pull the leash up,do shhhh stay, make sure the dog looks at you also. then put your hand up in the stop way and walk away. if it comes to you take it back to the spot and do it again. this helped for me,i did that and walked away, when my dog listened i made it harder. i jogged around, made weird noises without looking at him, clapped, and sat down. sitting down made him come but i did the process over again and he learned to stay! finally! hope this helped. sory its long though!

What is a good way to get an old grumpy dog to quit barking at everyone that comes to the door without being rough?

I would invest in a bark collar. These collars emit a smell, noise, or shock that startles the animal. These do not hurt the animal in any way, but they are annoying. When a dog barks, they are immediately emitted so the dog will learn soon the barking is bad.

What can you do to calm your dog down on a ride in the car?

With all my dogs I have introduced them to my car and my husband's truck when they were puppies. Sounds like you have an adult dog. It takes patience to get them use to the car and this is what you do: Take the pet in your car (short trip) and then drive a mile or so and take the dog for a walk and play with it by throwing a stick or ball. Make it "fun time." Do this for two weeks. This way your dog will probably beat you to the car and feel it's going for a walk. Always carry a plastic container of water in the car so your dog can have a drink after the walk/playing. Be sure NEVER to leave your dog in the car for even 5 minutes if the weather is muggy or hot out because their normal temperature range is approx. 102 degrees. It only takes seconds for your dog to get over-heated (even if you leave the windows partially down) to die from heat stroke and it's a horrible way to die. I thought I would mention this simply because you aren't use to taking your dog in your car. It's a good idea to (if the day is cool or in the evening when it's not hot) to take the dog in the car with you if you are only going to be out for a short time such as popping in to do a little grocery shopping. Remember, dogs are smart, so by getting the dog in the car and they know at the end of the ride it's "fun time" you should get your dog over it's nervousness. I agree with everything the top person said but I have some very important tips to give you if your dog is restless and is very hyper and maybe can't control himself. # Never, ever pet the dog when it is in a nervous state of mind ,because if the dog is nervous and the tail is going back and forth really, really fast he's probably very nervous and if you pet him that's just saying go ahead you're doing exactly what I want you to do.When he's not doing what you want. # If the dog needs to go to the bathroom, take him for a walk, of course you already know that, but when he's on the walk that's the time to give him positive reinforcement and always remember to be the pack leader! Good luck!

Stop dog from chewing on stitches?

You can use commercial products like "Bitter Apple," available from your veterinarian or at a local pet store. Some dogs are unphazed by it. You can also try Tabasco, but be careful not to get it close to the wound. In the end, the surest way is to use an Elizabethan collar, which again is available from your veterinarian or pet store. This is a plastic cone that goes around the dog's head and attaches to his collar. Dogs don't like them, so be patient and try to help him have a good experience starting out by giving him treats and praise while wearing the Elizabethan collar.

Should you let your dog hump you?

Tell him no! then put him in another room. If he doesn't get the message, get him neutered.

Why do dogs bite?

Puppies bite for two main reasons. First, because they are teething and it is necessary for the proper development of their jaws and adult teeth. Second, they play bite to learn self defense and how to hunt. In play with litter mates and other puppies, they learn what is called "bite inhibition," or just how hard to bite without hurting. This is a critical skill for all dogs to learn. This one skill alone is the most significant element of preventing dog bite injuries (both to other dogs and to humans). See the related question on how to stop biting (link below).

Is there a way to teach a boy dog how to pee without peeing on his front legs?

Boy dogs are called Male Dogs for future knowledge and you can't train them not to pee on their front legs. Your dog must be a puppy so when he or she gets fed up with having their legs wet, they will change how to pee. Let mother nature take her course with your dog and as the dog gets older his or her peeing habits will change.

You're probably thinking of Toxocara Canis, the common roundworm of the dog. Toxocara eggs are present in the faeces of dogs which have not been treated with the appropriate medication. Total blindness from Toxocara infection is exceptional. It is rare even for the sight of one eye to be totally lost, though vision can be impaired.

also, take him on long walks like 5 times a day and let him loose in your yard alot (if you have one) and whenever you take your dog for a ride in your car at the front porch tell him to sit and stay, if he moves tell him firmly, NO and when you open the door, then tell him okay and let him go in the car. whenever you go on a hike take your dog with you because dogs love that and will be excited about going to the car. if you do this, for a long time, your dog will not even think about running away ever again. it worked with my dog!

one of the best ways of getting to know your dog/puppy is to see what stimulates it. Food or Treats and use these to train them. then get your dog to get used to the question "Do you want your toy/treat?" and once they have associated this saying to the reward they are easy to train.

You have the right idea but let me improve your answer a bit.

LEAVE the long training line on the dog, this way if the dog tries to go off and not return, you can step on the line. It is best if you train the basics of heel and stay BEFORE you turn the dog loose. MOST dogs will stay with in thirty feet of you, if you are the leader. You also want to leave the training line on because if you run after the dog and grab it to put the leash back on you will cause the dog to cower and try harder not to get caught.. IF your dog runs off, go out call its name and SIT DOWN. The dog should come to see what is wrong with you. IF it keeps going, go the other way, calling its name and the command come. Again, basic training should be done before you ever turn the dog loose. You are correct too in that if the dog loves you and respects you, it will not run away, it may go to see things and have a bit of a run, but it will come home. Also, taking the dog out for a run is a good way the dog knows you understand what it is needing... Time with you and you to be the leader.

Is it easy to train dogs?

It is very easy to train a dog…. IF

You are willing to put in the time, effort, patience, persistence, love & guidance.

You are committed to doing it right, not trying to take shortcuts, or use heavy-handed techniques that shake your dog’s trust in you, and bond with you.

You get the dog as a puppy of 10–12 weeks, and begin the process right away, so that learning is part of the puppy’s way of life.

If you adopt/rescue/get an older puppy or an adult, you factor in the experiences that dog may have had before it came to you, and allow for the extra time, patience, understanding that such a dog might need, to readjust from fear, sadness, insecurity, pain, or even just a totally different way of training.

Training a dog is a whole lot more about training the humans, because dogs will follow the lead of their person or people, and if those people are not experienced, or are inconsistent, or short-tempered, or get frustrated easily, then the dog will be confused and not be able to learn, because the rules keep changing.

So the most important thing to know is that it is “easy to train a dog” IF the dog’s owner is willing to learn the proper methods, and follow them consistently!

Dogs are innately tuned to us, and most breeds bond and want to please. This is from many, many thousands of years and generations of dogs working with us, and learning how to read us and follow us, because pleasing us is beneficial to both species. Dogs look for ways to understand us - one of my dogs watches what clothes I choose in the morning, and which shoes. She can tell whether they are going for a ride in the car, whether I am staying home with them, or leaving them home for a while, just by observing me. This is how in tune with us they are.

Why do male dogs that are house trained urinate in the house?

Some indoor urination in dogs can be marking--thus territorial--behavior, but this is most common in particularly territorial dogs, adolescent males (or more territorial females), and dogs with behavioral problems. Most dogs can easily be taught not to urinate indoors.

To a dog, the house--aside of the dog's sleeping area--is just an extension of the outside world unless it is taught otherwise. Most don't understand, without training, that it is inappropriate to relieve oneself in the living room. After all, that's not a place where he has to sleep and, even if he does sleep in the living room, he can just pick a place he hasn't urinated.

Dogs are intelligent and trainable creatures, however, and once they understand that it is proper pack etiquette for the 'pack' that is your family for him to urinate outside, barring other problems, you'll generally have a housebroken dog. Difficulty in housebreaking varies greatly by both breed and individual dog.

How do you stop dog growling when he is feeding?

Wolves are wild animals, not pets. Any animal that may be even part wild is a danger to other animals an people. Wolves as pets and even half-wolves are very unpredictable creatures and may display hostile behavior without warning. They should be kept away from other animals and also children. Pets that are or may be part wild or feral should also be monitered closely for extremely dangerous behavior. Extreme care should be taken with a "pet" such as this. Dogs are pets because they have lived with humans as such for generations upon generations. Wolves and other wild animals do not have this sort of conditioning and therefore do not make safe pets. Extra caution should be taken when attempting to keep such an animal as a pet.

As a restaurant owner how do you know the dog is a service dog or just a pet?

The first clue is the animal's demeanor and behavior. A service animal should be very well behaved and obedient. A dog who wanders around at the end of the leash aimlessly probably isn't a service animal. If you still aren't certain, you can ask the animal's owner if it is a service dog. Businesses are permitted to ask whether an animal is a service animal, and what tasks the animal is trained to perform that the human handler cannot do for themselves. The business is not, however, permitted to ask for information about the specific nature of the person's disability or other invasive questions. If an animal is not trained to perform tasks to mitigate the handler's disability, then it isn't a service animal under the ADA. Guide dogs usually wear a special leather harness that helps them to guide their owner. In addition to the harness, the owner will also use a leash for controlling and directing the dog. Most other types of service animal wear some sort of marking such as a vest or cape, or special gear, like a harness. However, not all service dogs will wear special markings. Under the ADA, they aren't required to be marked. Unfortunately, the presence or absence of a cape or gear alone doesn't make it clear whether or not an animal is really a service animal.

Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people who buy gear over the Internet to try to pass their pets off as service animals. Sadly, this is also true with certification. Anyone can forge their own certification or purchase fake certification over the Internet for their pets. Many states have begun taking steps to prosecute those who falsely claim their pets as service animals with stiff fines and jail time.

Can you crate two dogs in one crate?

Yes you can and you often have to if you are using a crate to house train a young puppy. Some crates come with a divider panel that you can place where ever you need it in the crate depending on the size of your dog. If yours does not have a panel you could use a piece of plywood cut to fit inside. Sometimes if the space is much bigger than the dog they will still eliminate in the crate. Dividing it and making the space smaller usually corrects this.

What is a guard dog?
