Oxygen is needed for the Kreb's cycle to function. This releases the energy needed by the organs of the body. The brain cannot function without this energy; therefore, one will pass out before the body actually dies. Once one passes out, the lungs will expand because air will travel from high pressure to low pressure, starting the breathing.
Do dolphins substitute hearing for another sense?
A dolphin uses echolocation which is an advanced form of SONAR to "see" things under water. They can see quite well with their eyes above water. It's not really a substitution per se, but an enhancement of the hearing faculty to adapt to underwater conditions.

No. Wolves care for their young for several years before chasing them off to be on their own. Sometimes wolves never leave their parents' pack if there is enough room and food for them to stay. It depends on the resources available. Either way, a wolf never abandons it's pups when they're just over a month old, wolves aren't even fully grown until they are at least 2 years old.

Why do dolphins swim backwards?
cause they love doing tricks. dont you know that they do other TRICKS.
Yes! By calling 9-1-1 or notifying available lifeguards, the area can be secured for a rescue team which may need additional manpower to assist with the animals' return to sea. They have been known to circle & re-strand themselves! Do NOT under any circumstances try this alone! Off the coast of Chile, Orca have been seen surfing in to the shore to prey on seals. You might look like one to them! This is NOT a drill, people!
Note: this answered the question: "should we be saving whales and dolphins" "yes", without any rationale, and went on to make some points on how to save them. The answer lacks both depth and understanding.
I have saved whales, and cried, exhausted, and felt at the time it was the right thing to do. I am now just starting to have second thoughts. What if they are doing it deliberately, trying to communicate to us a message: 'please stop slaughtering our families and our bravest ones will come to you freely'. If this is a even a possibility, and the level of social intelligence and complexity of these creatures certainly does not exclude it my mind, what does our act of dragging them back out to sea communicate back to them? It is kind of horrifying.

Is it lawful to kill and eat dolphins in the US?
The Mahi-mahi, Coryphaena hippurus, also known as dolphin, common dolphin-fish, doradomaverikos, or lampuki (in Maltese) are surface-dwelling ray-finned fish found in off-shore tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. They are one of only two members of the Coryphaenidae family, the other being the Pompano dolphinfish. The name "mahi-mahi" ("strong-strong" in Hawaiian), particularly used on restaurant menus, has been adopted in recent years to avoid confusing these fish with dolphins, which are mammals. They are often referred to as tuna to avoid this confusion. These fish are a common served fish at many seafood style restaurants. Dolphins, (i.e. The ever so popular T.V. Star, Flipper) are aquatic mammals that are closely related to whales and porpoises. There are almost forty species of dolphin in seventeen genera. They vary in size from 1.2 metres (4 ft) and 40 kilograms (88 lb) (Maui's Dolphin), up to 9.5 m (30 ft) and ten tonnes (the Orca or Killer Whale). They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, mostly eating fish and squid. The family Delphinidae is the largest in the Cetacea, and relatively recent: dolphins evolved about ten million years ago, during the Miocene. Dolphins are considered to be amongst the most intelligent of animals and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture. Dolphins are protected by an amendment to the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act. This was created to ensure the vitality of various species of marine mammals nearing extinction or depletion due to human activity.
*Mahi-mahi is not a protected species of fish.
