What is the skin texture of a dolphin?
All species of dolphins have a body covering of skin (not scales). All mammals have a covering of skin, usually combined with hair in some form.
In the case of the dolphin, the uppermost layer of the skin produces an oil which forms a film that covers the dolphin's whole body.
How long do young dolphins stay with there mother for?
dolphins need to stay with there mothers for about years.
The length of a dolphin is just like humans, it varies.
What rainforest do river dolphins live in?
It lives around: South asia, southeast asia, East asia, central, and south america.
It is endangered in pakistan, near the indus river.
the people had overfished, polluted their habitat, and had acciendents during heavy river traffic.
I wish this helped you alot~ thanks
Dolphins range in size from the small tucuxi dolphin, which grows to about 1.2 m (4 ft) in length and weighs about 50 kg (110 lb), to the orca, which can grow to 9.8 m (32 ft) in length and weigh over 5,500 kg (12,100 lb). In most dolphins males grow slightly larger than females.
Can dolphin babies swim when their born?
Yes - the mother will swim underneath the baby and help it get to the surface to breath, but the baby is born knowing how to swim.
Did dolphins once walk on land?
Fossil remains show dolphins and whales were four-footed land animals about 50 million years ago and share the same common ancestor as hippos and deer. Scientists believe they later transitioned to an aquatic lifestyle and their hind limbs disappeared.
Whale and dolphin fetuses also show signs of hind protrusions but these generally disappear before birth.
Though odd-shaped protrusions have been found near the tails of dolphins and whales captured in the past, researchers say this was the first time one had been found with well-developed, symmetrical fins, Hayashi said.
"I believe the fins may be remains from the time when dolphins' ancient ancestors lived on land … this is an unprecedented discovery," Seiji Osumi, an adviser at Tokyo's Institute of Cetacean Research, said at a news conference televised Sunday.
The second set of fins - much smaller than the dolphin's front fins - are about the size of human hands and protrude from near the tail on the dolphin's underside. The dolphin measures 8.92 feet and is about five years old, according to the museum.
Despite their big brains, scientists aren't convinced that dolphins are as intelligent as they get credit for. Their large brains may be due to the fact that they are warmblooded animals living in water.
How many clicks does a dolphin do in a day?
Depends on how much they have to say.about as many as they could.
How aggressive can a dolphin get?
dolphins are actually not that aggressive but they are strong enough to kill a human
How do dolphins and whales use sonar?
whales use sonar as echolocation they make sounds, which travel in the ocean and bounce of solid objects like fish so they use sonar to 'hunt' and dolphins do that a lot its like sound is their sight
Depends on which dolphins you're talking about. Most dolphin species are not blind. But there are river dolphins who live in very murky waters, where sight isn't particularly useful.
And of course there might be individuals that have become blind through injury or disease.
No Dolphins are not blind. However they use sonar to judge what and where objects and other animals are from far away. They also use this same sonar to communicate with other dolphins.
Is a monkey smarter than a dolphin?
Chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans are considered the smartest animals. Scientists
haven't found a list yet, that puts one of these ahead of the others. They're all smarter than dolphins, but dolphins shouldn't be underestimated, as they too are very intelligent creatures. Scientists are still finding the extent of their intelligence.
New Research:
According to the Jonathan Leake article on TimesOnline on January 3, 2010, dolphins are now known to be second only to humans in intelligence. Scientists say they should be considered "non-human persons". Please read the article for more details.
Spinner dolphins are very acrobatic. They get their name because after they jump out of the water, they can spin around as many as 16 times on their tails before diving back into the water again. Besides spinning, they can also do somersaults and other exciting leaps in the air. Spinners sometimes travel in groups of up to 1,000 dolphins. People often watch spinners off the coast of Hawaii as they perform their amazing spins and leaps. Spinner dolphins can grow up to the length of five- eight feet and weigh up to 200 pounds.
Why dolphins should not be held in captivity?
1) Dolphins are VERY smart, VERY social and have VERY specialized needs. They belong in the wild with their families where they can swim many miles a day and hunt for their prey.
2) They communicate through echolocation (emitting calls out to the environment and gathering information about their environment from the echos). In captivity, their echolocation just bounces off the walls of their concrete tanks.
3) Some captive dolphin facilities purchase dolphins from cruel dolphin hunts that take place in certain parts of the world, effectively funding the hunts and keeping them going. In Taiji, Japan, dolphins are driven into a shallow cove, many are slaughtered and some are selected for dolphin display facilities.
How many minutes can a dolphin dive?
dolphins can breathe underwater for about 15 minutes after that they have to go back to the surface to breathe some oxygen
ps: dolphins are mammals
Does it hurt dolphins to ride on them?
Yes, you can ride a dolphin. I ride dolphins nearly every day, as I am a dolphin rider. Dolphin riding is actually very fun and feels great when the dolphin you are mounted on jumps. Dolphin riding is not only possible, it's great fun.
When dolphins die do they sink in the water?
I dont know, i would say that they would float because when animals die, they like.. bloat up!
How many babies do dolphins have every 10 years?
From the research from the last 10 years there are almost 40 different species of dolphins. It is said that the number of species of dolphins was much less than this million of years ago.
