I heard that it originated with the old NCR company. The president (Possibly founder) was told that someone was so valuable to the company that he could never be let go.. The president put the invaluable employees desk on the front lawn and set it on fire, then let him go.. Interesting, but I've heard that in communities in the olden days, if they wanted to get rid of somebody without harming them they would burn their houses down.
