Not only are they different heights, but they are different sizes. They are this way to accomodate different people. Some are tall, some are short. Some have small hands and need thinner necks, and some have large hands that can handle a thick-necked bass just fine. There are different styles for different people's playing styles. Children can't play a bass meant for an adult. They couldn't reach and they don't have the strength to push down the strings or even carry a full size bass. Hope this helps!
