What are the key distinguishing characteristics of worms viruses and Trojan horses?
Well, a virus is a program that does things without the user's knowledge or consent. Some viruses (the Welchia worm, for instance) tried to be "good" and patch Windows PCs to prevent infection from other viruses. While the virus had good intentions, it did so without the user's permission and crashed hundreds of PCs due to wasteful bandwidth use (normally, in companies, an efficient method to distribute updates internally is used. Welchia didn't use it and clogged the internet connections of many businesses).
Now, a worm is a virus that can replicate on it's own. A full fledged worm, like the sasser worm, can infect on it's own without the user making a mistake (vulnerability found, exploited, worm installed, spread to other pcs- and you didn't have to do anything). Most worms rely on email though- you open the wrong email or attachment, you get infected, and your computer spams out the worm to others, making it self propogating.
A Trojan is a virus that makes you download it manually by impersonating a desirable program (you need to download this to watch a video, free pornographic material, free antivirus, etc). It doesn't spread on it's own but causes undesirable behavior when installed.
Hope this helps!

How can a computer virus affect your CPU?
Viruses affect your computer's CPU by consuming both CPU time and resources. A virus is just like any other program: it needs dedication from the CPU to properly execute. This can cause the CPU to slow down significantly if your computer is infested with viruses, since the computer cannot respond to each and every process in a timely manner. There is also such thing as a "CPU virus". These viruses infect and damage the actual hardware of a computer. Since it is damaging the hardware of a computer rather than the software, the restoration afterwards can be pricey and there can be little to do to stop the virus from destroying your computer.
What parts of a computer do viruses infect?
Their are many parts of a computer that viruses infect. Most viruses infect a certain file or program so that whenever that file is run, the virus is also executed.
Some viruses called Master Boot Record viruses infect the Master Boot Record of your computer. The Master Boot Record is the partition of your computer first executed when you boot up your computer. When you turn on your computer, it runs all the programs inside the Master Boot Record partition and then passes control to other child processes. Viruses in this class infect the Master Boot Record so that whenever your turn on your computer, the viruses runs at startup too. These viruses are very tricky to find as they hide in a very deep part of your Operating System and manually deleting them could damage your computer.

The virus is on the hard drive so if you get a new hard drive the virus will be gone. A cheaper option would be to just reinstall the operating system though. (Vista, Win 7)
Try doing a factory restore on your computer to reset it back to it's original factory settings. You will loose everything, but it will get rid of the virus.

What makes computer viruses happen?
Computer viruses exist because malicious "hackers" write them and disseminate them. Then other people download infected files or find infected computer media, and they run them. They are not the same as biological viruses. So if a computer virus or popup tells you someone dropped a disk in the toilet, you can rest assured that this is not how you got the virus. Computer viruses are just self-replicating computer code that often do malicious things to your computer.
In the 1980's and 1990's, computer labs were popular, and public libraries have computers available to the public even now. So if you used a public computer, you'd have a chance of getting a computer virus if you brought diskettes with you and inserted them in an infected computer or brought them home with you.
Nowadays, people are more likely to get viruses from going to bad websites, opening email attachments, using programs obtained through file-sharing or torrents, or using any program that comes from a questionable source.
How can you protect your computer from viruses and other malware?
Use a Anti-Virus such as AVG internet secuirty, or malwarebytes. It is easy to find free anti virus programs too. It's just that the paid ones are usually the better way to go if it is a well-trusted company.

No it is not. I came home and on turning on my PC and noticed some unusual behaviour. Checked my Firefox history and noticed my housemates son had visited we7.
I'm a IT Systems Engineer so am quite familiar with viruses so imediately suspected a
"Free" music site aimed at teens. Low and behold, as soon as I revisted We7 Avast
blocked the following,
Sign of "Win32:Trojan-gen {Other}" has been found in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Client.exe" file.
Needless to say www.we7.com in now in my hosts file, address 127.0.0.1 - He'll never
visit it again on this PC.
I can't be sure if we7 are aware of this infection or not - my guess is some ad affiliate
have infected ad which are displayed on we7. My advice, use Firefox, Adblocker Plus
and a selection of adware scanners and a descent anti-virus app. Update and Scan regularly as spyware and virii are getting infinitely more complex. Some are impossible
to detect.
