How can you tell if you have an ear infection?
For middle ear infection the symptoms are:
- (Severe) ear pain, but this not always occurs
- Dizziness or loss of balance
- Fever and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Itch in the infected ear
- A feeling of blockage or pressure in the ear
- Hearing problem or muffled hearing, sometimes even temporary loss of hearing (can last a few days)
- Sometimes the eardrum bursts. This lets out infected fluids and the ear becomes runny for a few days

- Another cause can be the over-enthusiastically cleaning or scratching of the ear canal (e.g. with a cotton bud or even q-tip). The lining in there is very thin and easily damaged and infected
- Ear wax can also cause a feeling of blockage, itching of the area, mild inflammation and pain and sometimes even hearing loss
- Nutritional deficiency, skin allergies and other infections can also be one of the causes
- Finally an ear injury may be the cause of the infection
